Hey everybody, new to the forums. Looking into making my first knife soon and was just wondering if there was any guy's on the forums from Washington?

Sorry if i posted this in the wrong section.

Thanks,

Roby

Yes, there's Salem Straub, myself, Michael Hill, and a few others I've seen with WA addresses. Bruce Bump even calls WA home. You are in good company up here in the great PNW.

By the way, I've been to Sedro-Woolley a few times. We come there when we're just looking for some out of the way antiquing.

I live in Washington but may be too far to help out very much. As mentioned, David Lisch is a great instructor.

I don't put myuself in the same category as any of the other guys, but I am just over the mountains in Winthrop. Hopefully the North Cascades Pass will be plowed out in a few weeks. Also, there are forum members in Tonasket, Winlock, and other locations.

Alpha Knife Suppliers is in Snohomish, one of the best.

I moved back home to Montana, but, am working in Anacortes and living in Mt Vernon. No tools here but, would be willing to come over and spend a little time with you and point you in the right direction as I see it anyway.

There are a ton of good makers in WA. I'll add Tom Ferry, Ray Rogers over here by me, Todd Begg, Phil Boguszewski, Lyle Brunckhorst in Bothell, Gary House and Ed and Martin Schempp all in Ephrata, Michael Rader over there on the coast, and a bunch more you may not have heard of.

This mental list has been augmented with some info from Knives 2007. Not sure who has moved. But with the above and Bruce Bump and Dave Lisch, I'd say we are probably one of the premier states for pattern welding talent.

Also, you should look up the NWBA- Northwest Blacksmith's Association. Lots of bladesmiths there, they do tatara smelts and stuff. I miss a lot of that since I live on this side of the Cascades. It's worth it though!

For those of you in WA, did any of you ever know a hobbyist maker with the last name of Brown? I didn't know him personally, but he recently passed on and his son is trying to sell off most of his shop. I know he has an Enco mill (I'd buy it if I weren't in TX) and an old Bader B2, as well as a lot of blade steel (some unlabelled, unfortunately) and enough handle material to last decades. The son seems to be a great guy from the conversations we've had, and I'd love to help him out if possible. If anyone is interested, shoot me an email. Next time I'm on the phone I'll ask if I can give out his contact info to those who ask. He's about 40 mi outside Seattle in Gig Harbor.

I think I've heard of this Washington place before.... I must not have met the qualifications for the list.

Nick Wheeler? Isn't he that guy that puts gigantic oversized tangs on his blades? :D

Nick is the guy who makes those Damascus machetes with the fancy handles. I live the Tri Cities, (most don't know there are four Cities with adjoining borders) where glowing in the dark is normal. Jess

I'm a eastern Wa guy very much a novice but having fun, and learning a ton from the generous postings here.
