Watch pocket carry?

You guys must have large watch pockets. I wear Wranglers and can only fit very small objects in the watch pocket.

Do you carry horizontal or vertical?

I wear Wrangler Riggs jeans and they have huge watch pockets. I can carry up to about a 3 1/4 inch knife horizontally. A 4 1/4 inch knife rides close to horizontal but it tilts upwards a little because the pocket has a gradual curve on one end.

I don't use the watch pocket for knives anymore but I used to. I carry a pocket watch in there now.

I limit my watch pocket carry to 3" knives (such as this Case 6225 1/2), otherwise they seem to catch in my belt when I sit down. OH

Have recently started wearing waistcoats (something to do with my age I think). What handy items of clothing they are! Providing they're the ones with real pockets, you can get everything you'd usually stuff uncomfortably into your trousers or jeans; phone, wallet, keys and yes a small folder in the watch pocket, usually for me something gentlemanly like my Case peanut, R.R. medium jigged bone stockman or my little old ivory handled, equal end Turner and Co pen. Just take the thing off, put over the back of a chair and you're completely unencumbered. They're like the male version of the handbag. I really do feel as though I've discovered something vouchsafed to those only of a certain age here. No wonder so many old timers favoured them. Look good too I reckon, but again that could be something to do with me getting older as well, anyway highly recommended.

I wear Lands End jeans and the watch pocket is only large enough to carry a peanut sized knife, without the risk of falling out. I carry one like that very rarely. At this time my watch pockets are mostly wasted on me.

Haven't lost one from there yet now I carry a Case Peanut there

I use the watchpocket frequently, and have never had an issue with a knife falling out. It seems more secure than deep pocket carry, where my knife has slipped out several time!

Where the smaller watch pocket opens more up and a knife is trapped in the smaller confines of the pocket, the larger pants pocket things have more room to move around, so as you sit back on the couch it can slide out

my zippo usually sits in the watch pocket, but now this little guy modded by glenn will be going in there.

I've never lost one and my Peanut or Pemberton are always in the WP as a companion to my primary knife (77 Barlow) in RFP.

Some pants have much "better" watch pocket than others (deeper/roomier) so be careful what your particular pants WP is like as some would be more prone to losing it than others. As Cannonball said above, women's typical pants pockets are notoriously useless (my wife loses things out of her pockets on a routine basis), I couldn't tell you how many times I see her walk by and something is just about to fall out of her pocket!

Finally found this thread so I can give an update. Well I did find out :p. Went to lunch, friend dropped some cash under the table. I leaned over/down to pick up her stuff. Later realized my knife wasn't in my watch pocket and restaurant didn't find it. Oh well it served me well....

I'll find out :p. Just started carrying a 3 7/8" knife there today. Never thought to stash a knife there, would've assumed it wouldn't fit. But seeing people mention carrying knives there got me curious and whadda ya know it fits nicely. Ah the scratches I could've saved. I always considered it a change pocket.

Boy that sucks losing a knife like that. I've always carried my knife in my left pocket down deep. Besides being left handed, I never trusted the watch pocket to hold my knife as well.

Sorry about your knife, chickenfried. I carry in my watch pocket everyday, but I don't carry anything larger than 3 1/4" in my Levi 527s or 3 1/2" in my Carhartt Rip Stops. Anything larger and the end of the knife will be too close to the top of the pocket for my comfort. I've had way more knives slip out of my front pockets than my watch pockets. I've actually got two knives in my Levi's watch pocket today (Peanut and Lakota Teal).

That is very unfortunate. That's a nice knife and I'm sure you hated losing it.

If you like watch pocket carry enough to consider changing the pants you wear, there are other options that allow for horizontal carry.

As mentioned above, watch pocket sizes vary greatly. For years I thought it would be nice to carry a pocket knife in my watch pocket but I always wore Levis jeans and the only option with those was to carry the knife vertically. The watch pocket wasn't anywhere near wide enough to carry even a small knife horizontally so I didn't even try it because I knew it would slip out when I bent over. Then one day I stumbled upon these Wrangler Riggs jeans in a local hardware store. Bought a pair and liked them even better than the Levis regardless of the watch pocket. But the size of the watch pocket was the primary reason that I bought them. Went back a few days later and bought three more pair.

Anyway, the jeans are super comfortable, have other useful pockets, and they have a huge watch pocket that allows for horizontal carry of even a good sized knife.

The knife in the pick is an Old Timer 34OT at about 3 1/4 inches closed. It virtually can't slip out because when I bend over the curvature of my waist holds the knife in place instead of pushing it out the top. The same principle as carrying horizontally in the regular front pocket.

As you can see, the watch pocket is huge. My fingers are not bent.

Any knife under 3" or so works great in watch pocket, or coin pocket as young people say, and that is where I carry most of my knives. Even an Emerson mini-CQC-7

That's a bummer. I don't usually CARRY my folder in my watch pocket unless they are really deep pockets. I usually use a cheap pocket clip sheath that came with a Rough Rider. Nothing fancy, but it works.

Now, I DO use my watch pocket as my temporary "sheath" when I'm cutting up boxes at work. Its faster to kind of tuck it in there between cuts that down deep in my main pocket.

I have a knife in my watchpocket right now:) To me it seems more secure than floating around in the bottom of a larger pocket!
