Watch Recommendation

Hey, I'm just trying to prevent you from going outside and looking like an idiot. If you want to look like an idiot then by all means put your little paracord strap on whichever meaningless watch you choose to buy. It'll go great with your personality.

Sir, I'm not trying to sound rude here, but please don't insult me because I have a different opinion than you. I understand that you and I have a different view on watches. You view them as something more than just a device for telling time, and I respect that. But for me, I only need a watch in order to tell what time it is, nothing more, nothing less. I hope you understand that. And as for the paracord band, I generally wear a paracord bracelet and was simply considering combining the two into one. Unless you have a good recommendation for a watch around my price range, please leave this thread. Thank you.

Okay, you're right. I acted like an arrogant jerk and I apologize for it. I guess I am a real snob when it comes to watches.

There aren't too many options in your $50.00 range other than Casio and Timex. Also look up Freestyle watches on ebay. You can find them for around $50.00 used and in good condition. They are of decent quality and should last a while.

Again I apologize for being a douche.

Thank for apologizing...you saved yourself some unwanted attention from me. :)

Carry on....

You do realize that I'm trying to tell you that you NEED to spend much more than $50.00 for a true timepiece right? It's not about the money, it's about your SELF respect. Any man worth his salt knows that a significant timepiece is crucial to his persona.

For your own sake, at least consider spending an extra $150.00 for a Seiko or Orient.

This is borderline trolling. Discuss the topic, not the poster.
It is his money to spend, not yours. If you cannot post recommendations in line with his prerequisites, perhaps you should not post.

That being said there are several value brands that are in line with the OP's requirements. My personal favorite is the Seiko 5.
Contrary to what some have said in this thread, after wearing Seiko 5 automatics's for the last 30 years, I have yet to have one that wasn't properly regulated and keeping time. The key is to only buy from an authorized source and faithfully keep it clean and wound. They are very good, tough watches for $100 or less.

jmflem, look at these (~$35):

Casio Men's Core MTP1306D-1AV

Casio Men's Core MTP1329D-1AV

Casio Men's Core MTP1330D-1AV

There are other Casio Core models you may like better. Just google "CASIO CORE".

To set the time on an automatic, all you do is pull the crown out a little bit, maybe about .5mm. You should hear an audible and feel as it clicks into place. That usually adjusts the day and date. Pull it out a little bit more and you can adjust the time. There is no need to take the case back off unless you are going to modify the watch.
Depends entirely on the watch movement. What you post works on some but by no means on all.

My oldest brother is filthy rich. I mean FILTHY RICH. He wears a Timex. Always has. He certainly doesn't look like an idiot, and no one who knows him thinks him an idiot. He'd likely tell you that telling another man how to spend his money that he doesn't want to spend is how one looks like an idiot.

Bottom line: the VAST majority of people will not notice what watch you are wearing. Buy what you want without fear of being judged by others and let others do the same without fear of being judged by you.

Here's another fun Timex:

This is a much loved brand Maratac AQC Compass watch made by Timex (the little red hand when deployed points North).

I've been trying to find one at a steal of a price or the Timex version (Timex issued their own version of the Maratac AQR), for ages now. I really appreciate Timex for their uncluttered watch dials. They remind me of similar military style watches like Hamilton's Khaki series which I've had a few of as well as those old 1990's rubber Gruen and Tag sport watches. PS for me it's the fun of trying to find one at a steal of a price and not actually owning the watch. It's like when I was able to find old Omega bumpers in solid original condition sometimes for around $200.

The great thing about a Weekender is you can throw it out a 4th floor window, run downstairs and so long as no one scoops it up on you, you can put it back on your wrist and it will keep on working. I only know because I drunkenly did so with my Weekender one evening while on the fire escape of my NYC apartment because I was pondering the "Takes a licking motto" of Timex. :D I can name about a dozen brands of watches that I've owned over the years that have more interesting internals than that Weekender which would not HAVE survived being tossed out of a Manhattan window! Anyhow I will always have a soft spot for the Weekender, lol.

my Timex keeps great time

A Timex will keep better time than an automatic. Meaning your Timex will keep better time than a $3,000 Omega, a $5000 Grand Seiko, or a $10,000 Rolex. ;)

Edit: That's not to say a Timex is "better" unless you're talking about the ability to keep time. Watches are one of those things that people will pay more for what is essentially outdated technology. My nicest watch is a Raymond Weil Maestro with a date dial and moon phase display. Love it.

If you go to www.steepandcheap.com right now, and scroll down a bit, they have a limited time sale on watches. There are several there in many price ranges. If you see one you like the looks of, do a search for that model and "Reviews" on google. That should weed out any negative watches.

Good luck! The sale does end in 7 hours from the time of this post, but that site often has watches in their other sections, so look around.

I purchased a Timex (battery quartz digital) and it didn't last 6 months. I had always believed Timex was a good everyday watch. But it has to work. Don't know if that is an aberation or typical, but it is the second one just like it that has died.

I recommend a Casio G-Shock of your choosing. You can find them in the $50 price range; a budget up to $100 would make the choices much easier even though you would probably not spend that.

I've been trying to find one at a steal of a price

Those are almost impossible to find now. I used to own one and sold it here on the forums for around $45 (if I recall correctly) a while back. If I had known you wanted one so bad I probably would have just given it to you.

Thanks I'm sure one will pop up! They have a new model out but I picked up the Timex version of a gshock with digital compass feature for fun as I have been doing a good amount of kayaking the past few years.

I had my original gshock since 1998 roughly. It has gone through only one battery swap in all this time.

Pretty sure some of these have been mentioned here before, but anyhoo here's my suggestions, ALL OF WHICH ARE WATCHES I OWN, divided by category.

-as an everyday wearer- you'd be hard pressed to find a better cheapy than the Seiko 5 SNK809. It houses the proven accurate and durable 7s26 movement, and has a day/date complication.

-as a beater- Casio AE-1200, pick between black, silver, and green. It's kinda a cult classic of sorts on a certain watch-centric forum, look up "Casio Royale". Paid $28 at a certain big box store for mine.

-as a pocket watch- no date function on this one, but a plain old Molnija pocket watch would be perfect. Good, robust workhorse movement, no frills stainless case, classy blued steel hands and sub-second hand. easily available on the big auction site within our price range.

-as a dress watch- vintage swiss and soviet made mechanical dress watches are plentful on aforementioned auction site, if you look carefully. My sub- $30 pieces that I picked up from there and gotten IN GOOD RUNNING CONDITION include: 1940s Wittnauer, late '50s Vostok Kama, early 60s copper dial Benrus, and an old Helbros Invincible of unknown vintage.

Hope this helps you in your search.

I know squat about watches, but really love the Citizen Eco drive I own because it just works. Never have to deal with winding or a battery, I pull it out of the drawer and it is ready to go. My wife has nought me many watches over the years but this is the one I wear because it is always ready to go.
