Watch Recommendation

Just buy a good old Timex with Indiglo and forget the rest. I have Tags, Omegas, Seikos, etc. but the Timex, with the Indiglo feature is the one I usually wear these days. They are in your price range and more importantly, they work. Also, pushing the crown lights up the face. This is a useful feature at night, not only for time, but for finding your way to the bathroom in a dark hotel room when traveling.

Try the current casio duro diver! Currently WAY cheap on amazon. Well within your budget and has a date window like you wanted  I've got one, and love it. It keeps great time, +/- 2 seconds per week I'd say. It is a quartz then, obviously. Looks good going to work, the woods, or with a suit (if you choose leather bands to replace the rubber ones with) and is durable as hell. I bought mine for scuba diving, and it's never skipped a beat. The only non-tritium lume that I've ever seen that's better is seiko's. The seikos that people have recommended are NOT VERY WATERPROOF. I've had the casio down to ~75 feet with no issues whatsoever. A lady the other day asked who bought me my watch, because she assumed I couldn't afford it myself  not 100% if that's good or bad... :D here are some pics of mine: (again, with a new band.)

FYI, I have large-ish hands.

I really like the looks of this Citizen Eco-Drive:

It's the nice, simple, casual look I want. I only wish it was automatic, and a little bit less expensive (though if it was auto I'd consider paying that much). Do you know of any other automatics that look similar around $80? I'm liking the Seiko 5 but it's just a little bit boring IMO.

I picked up what I think is a nice looking automatic for under $30. It is super cheap, plastic instead of sapphire or glass, but it has a real leather band. works well, just gotta remember to move while wearing it!

Autos can be problematic, especially cheaper ones. I've not a lot of experience, so this is coming 2nd hand. But, for your budget, your best bet is a decent quartz movement.

hehehehehe. You opened with, "I'm looking for a watch as a time telling device more than for fashion." Now you're considering other aspects/criteria. Good on ya, bro.

Be patient and keep looking. Several Seikos with the great 7s26 automatic movement are relatively inexpensive. Look at all of them.

Well might as well open the can of worms. Do a google search for orient and invicta while you are at it. I don't recommend most of their watches but they both have a basic automatic diver that many watch nutties really don't have that much to critique about them in that they are solid daily wearers. The invicta has a medium and large version. I had one at some point. For the money they are great especially if you swap out their bracelets with better hardware.

This one below is an Invicta 8926, it has a Seiko NH35A automatic inside. The Orient Mako is another viable automatic for around the $100 mark.

Now I'm considering looks somewhat, but I guess what I meant in my original post was that I wasn't looking for something fancy. I'd like something casual, and the looks have to do with the enjoyment of owning it, not really others opinion of my fashion. When looking to buy a knife the aesthetics of it have a big part in whether I like the knife or not, since I consider them more than just tools. A lot of knives are works of art, which make them much more enjoyable to own.

I'm liking the look of an all black watch with a metal band. Do you guys have any recommendations on an automatic one at a decent price? Preferably under 40mm diameter.

the G-Shock a little too "tactical".

Yet your desire to replace a band with a paracord one isn't?

Although, I can imagine the paracord band not being "tactical" if it was any color besides the typical od, tan etc...

The G-Shock is also much too large and clunky. And yes, other colors of paracord are not "tactical." When I think about it, whenever I use paracord, it doesn't need to be as strong as it is. It's just a very useful sized, good looking cord. Paracord is usually considered "tactical" because its strength is very important in military usage, and it was originally designed for parachuting. But for my uses I like it because of it's convenient size and visual appeal (different colors). If you just think of it as rope, it's not very tactical at all :p.
