Water...at home, what do you do ?

I think until you independently test your own water supply from your tap, you won't know how good or bad it is.

Their test results depend on what "they" test for; they can't find or attest to something they don't test for.

Water standards (permissible levels of impurities) are arbitrary numbers that one may or may not find acceptable with more knowledge and information.

We decided we did not want to consume the type of fluoride at the (changing) concentration added to our water despite the fact the water tastes fine and is supposedly good. Officials vary the concentration of fluoride so there is no magic working number.

Also, one deals with their water delivery infrastructure, so the water officials test may not be the same quality water that comes out of your tap.

I've also been wanting to kick bottled water for a while now. Growing up in Florida with a good well I never realized how good we had it. Luckily, in our little town out here in WA there's a local spring that a resident was kind enough to tap and hook a system with hoses to so anyone can come get their fill. All that's asked in return is a small donation to keep things running. I'm planning on switching to that as our main source but I haven't settled on a setup yet for storing and dispensing it. I'd really like to avoid plastic but I'm not aware of many good glass options that hold at least a few gallons and can be easily washed if needed. Any ideas appreciated.

Another Big Berkey with the black filters that the previous regime in their infinite wisdom decided to ban. Hoping that will be over soon.

Okay... I had to read up on that because I've been thinking for a long while about buying a Berkey. And that is the most nonsensical governmental overstepping bureaucratic red tape I've ever seen. According to the EPA, the silver in the filters to stop microbial growth makes it a pesticide... Hilarious.

Now I just have to decide what model I'm buying.

I agree. Since then, we've been buying the replacement filters by boroux that fit. How about you?

So far no one has mentioned Water cooler type services. Anyone using these, and ballpark pricing if you do ?

around here, you can get the 5 gallon containers at walmart, lowes, etc. they run between 8 and 30 dollars depending on the branding.
then buy the dispenser, they run 80 dollars on up.
apparently they sell bottle top dispensers that fit on the containers now for way less.

We used to use one at an office I worked at and the 5 gallon containers were about 8 bucks and the rental on the dispenser was another 12 dollars a month. that was several years ago. if you google primo water delivery you can probably get all the information you are looking for there

I buy some bottled water for mon home, but have a whole house filter and RO system for home drinking

My black filters are still working well so we continue to use them, but I did purchase some of the older style ceramic filters just in case they don't get this sorted out any time soon. Hopefully this is taken care of shortly. I appreciate the tip though and will have to look into the Giroux filters.

Go ahead and buy the biggest one you can afford. You won't regret it.

Filtered through our LG fridge or from the garden hose if working outside.

Looked again at them the last couple of days. Think I'm settling on a Big Berkey. Now trying to sort through all the available options as well as where this thing would live.

I retired from a Natural gas utility and ran the leak truck, anytime the city had a busted water main they wanted me there because usually our gas ran beside the water lines and they were all cast iron. this was the old part of the city. one day I was on a busted line with the water dept. in a BIG flooded muddy hole with a busted 4” line, after they got it shut down he replaced about a 4' section of pipe with pvc and two compression couplings. before closing it up he tossed in two of those hockey puck swimming pool chlorination tablets.
I said...that's it? he said sure, that will kill anything that got in there.

So there goes my idea that any city water system is good for drinking. the whole house filter I had when I lived there was absolutely disgusting every time I changed it.
that was around the Tampa Bay area, now I live in N. Florida, my well is 300' deep with the pump hanging approx. 280' an man THAT water is good!
I have a whole house filter but all it catches is a few flakes of sand. my drinking water comes thru the refrigerator filter. :D

Steel roof, gutter, 400 gallons of buffer tank, 1000 gallon slow sand (biological) filter, 5800 gallons underground tankage.
That's impressive, you may be the only person that I've ever met that is that serious about water storage.
