Do any of you pack portable water filters in your kits? I have been using the Waterworks EX from msrcorp.com (Mountain Safety Research) mainly because of the ceramic element that has a charcoal liner. It will filter pesticides out of water. It also has a PES membrain that fiters down to .2 microns particles.

I use a PUR (now Katadyn) Hiker. It does a good job at getting the bugs, but chemicals are required for virus. I know it'll filter out chemicals, because I used it in Idaho one winter to filter the city water that we hauled to my friends property (no well) and they loaded it up with chems and it tasted real bad. After filtering through the hiker, no taste. I also carry MP1 tabs from Katadyn. The big advantage is that it won't clog in the field.

I use that Aquamira filtered water bottle. Real easy to use, but it doesn't hold that much. On the other hand, it doesn't weigh much either.

I use the Aquamira filter too, but I attach it to a 48oz nalgene canteen, they have the same threads. I also carry katydin purifying tabs and use them in conjunction when needed.

I use an msr also. also have a pur. I take them and use them on all backpacking trips, never gotten sick in over 12 years. I live where the water runs muddy. If i were up north where the water runs clearer I would uds a steri pen. www.rei.com

boiling works fine for clear water. but drinking brown, gritty water isn't pleasant, that is why iodine is an emergency item for me also.

I have used many filters through the years. The one I now use and swear by is my First Need. You actually test it by putting a couple of drops of food dye in water. It is working correctly if the dye is removed. It is one hell of a filter.

I will admit in most places it is overkill but I have seen people with various water borne illnesses and I don't want one.

I like Tiros solution a lot. I usually carry an Aquamira bottle and a largemouth. If you carry a setup like his, you have more capacity and still take less space. You can still carry a widemouth for other things. His would fit nicely in a smaller kit though.

I have heard that a few drops of clorox will kill anything. I've used it and never gotton sick. Have any of you heard of this?

Yep. Go to the Chlorox website and you'll find the information you need on purifying water with their bleach and you will also find out which bleach to use, because there is only one type that they recommend.

When using bleach, the water should be prefiltered to get rid of any particulate matter, prior to adding the bleach. The reason being is that the bleach will attach itself to the particulate matter, which weakens it's effectiveness against the bugs you are trying to kill.

I use a home made filter that I concocted from 20 mm PVC. It is very simple and uses synthetic fish filter floss and activated charcoal to strain out suspended aprticles and inprove water clarity. It does not totally treat the water just make it more palitable. I then treat it with iodine or chlorine in one form or another.

The filter is in the lower center next tothe Mora 2000. Mac

Bet it works better than my silk bandana and coffee filters.;)

I just switched over to the MP1 tabs. Going to get another card or two before prices go up.

Down in Brazil I use "Clor-in 1" tablets. They come in a foil covered blister pack. I like chlorine because you can use it to cook with easier. Water treated with iodine reacts with starch (rice, oatmeal, noodles, etc) and turns bright blue:eek: . To prevent this treat iodine water with a little ascorbic acid, vitamin C. Mac
