Waterjet Machined Knife Blanks

Both you guys need to stop this now. Last warning. This is a thread trying to stir up business for Mark not one for you guys to start bickering in about details of your posts! Take it private.

Damn Guys!!! HE has a paid membership to advertise what he does. I dont see a new knifemaker getting bashed around for bringing in what he does to the field. If you think Great Lakes is the be all end all to cutting materials from computer files you are seriously needing to find another crowd to be around.

There are plenty of busy knifemaker guys to keep Great Lakes, H2O, and other guys in business to give production a head start with pre cut parts.

I prefer my KaChunk - KaChunk Harbor Freight bandsaw because I make what I want, when I want and what size I want and do not draw my own Vector files for Gentlemen like Great Lakes and H2O to help me out cutting parts ahead of time.

If I supplied the production files needed I would not expect to pay for a set up fee and both these Gentlemen not charging for there time to do what others can not says alot to me.

Choose who you want to cut your stuff and ease up man.

Welcome aboard H2O!!!!!

Mark and I have spoke on the phone a few times. He offers the same service as I do. He can cut your parts like I can. If you prefer to use H2O's services, I will be glad to transfer the CAD I have done for you to him, right Steve? Mr. Numbers, I don't know you. Don't talk bad about something you know nothing about. Mark is not "competition". If anything, he is a great asset and I am glad to have him as a friend. If I break down, he would cover my back as I would do for him. So its not competition so to speak. I'm glad to have some "help" in this business. Mark, call anytime.

Yep, in my case you sent the CAD DXF to me though and I sent it to Mark sharing what I needed cut. The knife industry is small its true, but it is big enough to support all you guys and then some. Somehow I think you'll both be just fine.

Sorry about that, I have deleted my post as to not fill up this thread.

Mark, I am sorry if I caused and problems I was just trying to help!

welcome aboard h20. in reference to your question about other steels to stock id recommend looking into A2 and or 01. Ive considered having sum blanks cut as a trial run and those are the steels id prefer. it would be very nice to be able to call 1 company 2 do the cutting and that had materials on hand to save me the extra steps.

Hey guys I wasn't posting to try hit any nerves, just letting you guys know I am out there looking for business to provide for my family and a couple great employees. With out that incentive I would have a reason to go in every day and try make it happen.

Dave at GLWJ and I are only a couple out of many waterjet shops that are pursuing a dream of being our own man and providing for our loved ones. We put our money where our mouth is and had the balls to put our name on the contract and buy the machinery.

Please respect the fact that there is friendly competition and we all in this together. If there is anyone we should have an issue with it our Congress in Washington!

God help the little guy's in this country cause the political and elite class have taken care of themselves pretty well.

God Bless,

OK Guys....... Let's all sit around the campfire and sing koom-bay-yah. Now, doesn't that feel better.

Seriously, I'm glad to have Mark here, as well as Dave. We can use all the good sources and services we can get.

Make new friends and keep the old,
One is silver and the other gold............

Do you have any experience cutting:

the phenolic materials such as G10, Micarta...
Titanium

How do those cuts differ from steel, and what do we need to know about them
those materials, G10 in particular are pretty hard on the bandsaw blades

We have worked with G10 and Micarta as well as a lot of Ti alloy. G10 and Micarta are not the best to cut if you need to do small diameter holes, there are issues with delamination. Profiling is OK but you need to use a long lead in at the start to avoid damage to the material from the pierce. Titanium machines great, we have in on our table regularly and have had good results from .040" to 2" thick. I also weld Ti using an Inert Glovebox that I can hold <1ppm O2 level.

Thank you,

Dave, Thanks for your input letting everyone know we are all in this together, I appreciate your comments.
I have been curious how the 1/4" diameter vertical worked out for you?? I have one spare horizontal line left and will probably do the same thing when it's time. Abrasive waterjets are a great tool when everything is OK but things can sure leak quick under high pressure. I learned never put your toolbox away because Murphy's law will take over.

Thank you,

I've made parts for industrial applications from both A2 and O1 and didn't realize they make good knife steel. I think a still have a little bit of precision ground A2 stock in the material rack.

justintyme, thanks for your reply and I'll look into having some of this available as well.

Thank you for all the comments and replies.

There has been numerous inquiries if I could carry raw material. I am looking at the CPM alloys as well as 1095 and D2 in 3/32, 1/8 and 3/16 thicknesses but would like to get some feedback if you think there is something else out there you are interested in.

Another reoccurring topic has been set up charges and minimum charges. On the setup all I need is a template of what you want made, it can be paper, aluminum, steel, scanned trace or an actual part. I will convert it to a clean dxf file, then cut and send you the samples made from hot rolled sheet for your approval. All I ask is you cover the actual shipping charge (low risk for new customers). There is no set up charge to do the conversion from your template to to a dxf. The software I am using is a premium package (not free) and does great output. It does not have the dreaded "done by CAD/CAM process" look to it. All the arcs and lines are very exact with nice flowing geometry.

My prices are based on raw material size, thickness and quantity. There is a minimum charge of $100 on your actual orders, no charge for template to CAD conversions.

Blade 2010 is rapidly approaching, so if you are interested in a confidential professional waterjet supplier with quick turn around we look forward to working with you.

Thank you,

mostho,

Not sure how to ship to Italy??

I have no problem if the shipping isn't to much trouble.

Thank you for you interest.

What would be helpfull is to make a deal with a some steel suppliers so we can order direct from you. We would place an order for x number of blades from y steel and you will put together a cost for the steel and cutting. That saves a step of me ordering the steel and sending it to you. I would not mind waiting a week or so for you to order the stock. Places like admiral and flatground would provide a good range of steels to choose from.

BTW do you have a website? Thats how I catalog suppliers.

Couldnt have said it better. That would be convenient as hell:thumbup::D

Patrickknives,

Check out post #15 on this thread regarding stocking material.
Looks like the cost of raw material inventory could get rather expensive by the look of some of the prices I've seen. The issue I see is slow moving inventory could offset profit real fast. I'll probably pick a couple popular alloys to start and see how it goes from there. I can always order stock as needed but I don't want to have to debate material cost with markup for handling.

website is: leadingedgefab.com

Thank you for your inquiry,

What I was suggesting is to order the steel when we send our order in, you would not have to have inventory. I guess once we cut a deal on the waterjet I can arrange to have the steel shipped to you.

good luck,

This is a question for either Greatlakes or H2O.

I do a lot of my profile design in Adobe Illustrator. What file format do I need to save out as in order for you to extract the vectored file? The "native" format is from illustrator is *******.ai but I also can save as a pdf. There's often a lot of detail work in the profile, so I prefer that it not be redrawn.

Thanks in advance, guys.
