Ways to protect the Neck

Funny you should say that. Last year I was doing an outside show and a Rotti made off with one of my rawhide rattles.:D It was an easy sale.:D:D

that's great - would have made a funny video

Besides leather dye, is there another way to color the rawhide? Is dogbone rawhide the same as normal rawhide?

I use vinegaroon on rawhide, instead of soaking in water just dunk it in vinegaroon to soften, deep brown to black depending on leather..........Randy

I'm sure it would work. Just not very "old school" for traditional hawk. If I had a tactical hawk, I'd use the inner tube, or paracord.

I was talking about an axe not hawk. I agree, not cool on a hawk. I think the OP is talking axe also. SFA for Scandinavian Forest Axe from Gransfors Bruks.

Anyone put a bike inner tube over the axe handle, sheath style rather then wrap?

If you're going to do that on an axe handle I have a great tip for you. Years ago when I was into windsurfing we used to put inner tubes on out aluminum booms before the factories started rubber covering them.
Cut the tube leaving the valve on and clamp the tube just past the valve. Roll the other end of the tube into the tube and snap it over the end of the handle so the tube will be inside out when on the handle. Then blow up the tube at the valve and roll it up the handle. This should work well on an axe handle that has a bigger diameter than the tube. Hope this helps.

I buy these at Ace hardware but you can find them elsewhere- i just Googled and found a picture of the kind i buy they work great - and they dont cost much

i have 4 axes with wood handles and a couple of mauls and 2 axes with plastic/fiberglass handled - all 4 wood handles have these

I split wood at my house year round - some to sell - some for friends and most i burn in the winter

but since i became disabled a few years ago i often have friends come help and some young guys that have never split wood before the new guys are bad about smacking handles till they get some practice -- but even guys that are good every now and then smack a handle on a log

these little devices have saved many a handle

On a larger axe you slide your hand on the handle, so the rubber can only be on the first 4-6". As I understand this, you were using the whole thing. However, I am already thinking of a couple different ways to still use the concept.

Hey everyone! The axe I'm workin with is the Gransfor Bruks Small Forest Axe. CCKW, I made my first neck protector by wrapping the neck with paracord, put 2 layers on it, then pulled a 4" piece of bike tube up and over it. Man, it sure kept it snug until the first miss. After I missed the first time, the wrapping stayed secured but slipped down the handle. I had to un-do the whole thing... I did Pipemans suggestion last night. I think it turned out great! I'll post up pictures tomorrow for sure. I'm not much of a creative person so its not too fancy or anything, but completely functional:) Thanks again to everyone with their input.
