WE Knife opinions

Well, when more and more cutting videos keep coming out where the trio of M390/20CV/204P don't really perform that much better than S30V or S35VN as supplied by most of the larger names in the business I think we'll see where his word stands.
And that's fine, as long as they can explain away all the other cut tests showing a large difference between those steels.

It’s actually easy to explain. I’m on time constraints, but the short version is: different tests emphasize properties of steels differently. So, the question between Steve’s repeatable results and Pete’s repeatable results isn’t “who is wrong?”, it’s “what can we observe from each being more right than wrong?”

Possibly, though I'm not sold on the validity of Steve's conclusions. To each their own.

I have not tried any WE knives. One thing that I have observed is that those high-end Chinese brands (We and Reate, for example) do not seem to retain their values as well as counterpart American brands (ZT and Hinderer, for example). I suspect it has all to do with the stereotype of Made in China = low quality and/or the patriotism of Buying Made in America than with the actual quality of the knives.

I noticed that too. The Reate knives I see on the secondary market go for a lot less than they were new.

I’ve noticed that as well. The secondary market is not strong for Chinese knives, I think it’s just due to them being relatively new to the field. In a few years, if they keep up the excellent work, they’ll have a great reputation and secondary market prices will increase as the demand increases.

Lots of good conversation in this thread!

akadave2 akadave2 in the original post: I was very much in the same boat and apprehensive to try WE knives out a couple of years ago when they started producing knives under their own brand. Eventually I pulled the trigger on this WE 616. I carried it almost every day for a year before I touched up the edge and it was still plenty usable. And I used it for everything, and it still performs fabulously!

Ive ordered the Roxi. Im a sucker for wharncliffe style blades for everday use. Also its the easiest edge to get extremely sharp.

You might not want my opinion! :D

WE is becoming one of the best. Their quality is FAR SUPERIOR to a lot of other companies. Customer service is right up there too.
The heat treat is fantastic and the steel is exactly what they say it is!
You should do yourself a favor and try one.

So, same as in the US? Someone is always getting "fat" and it is generally not the worker bees.
You can't possibly think that it is the same difference. I ran a couple of machine shops and steel mill maintenance departments in different cities in the US and the guys on the floor made some pretty good money. The difference in china gets paid to the politburo of the communist party.
