We were all new here once

Hello,

Thank you Killgar for reposting this. I am a newbie and still trying to figure out where and how to post things here as a non-paying member. It's a little intimidating to follow the rules to the T so I am waiting and trying to correctly to see if it's worthwhile to pay for the membership. So far, people have been nice to me. I got messages from the admin about replying on the selling area, but looking at other people's thread there I cannot tell the difference whether it's about selling or just a non-selling thread. It will take some time for me to learn....

Hello Fly Label,

I made a couple about 20yr ago and then made a couple more over the last year or so, First knife I ever made was at a Game fair and was a "have a go at forging a knife" type set up. I am an engineer by trade and did a bit of forging during my Apprenticeship and some metallurgy at college. I am not clueless but have lots and lots of questions, I thought I would join as You guys here have been answering most of questions through google and thought it remiss of me not to join and contribute in some small way.

All the Best

Welcome. I am newbie myself involved in the art of making knives and collecting any sorts of vintage and custom made fixed blades and pocket knives. I came from an engineering career and decided to settle in something fun.

I suppose this is the closest this Forum has to a proper New member introductions sub-forum.
Im not new to knives, but have resided on European knives forums up to this point.

I have to say that having basic functionality such as image hosting, profile pictures or private messaging behind a pay wall does not provide the most welcoming atmosphere, quite to the contrary. Im used to having to pay for creating sales threads, but this one takes the cake fellas. The beging for a subscription in the auto generated welcome message doesn't make it any less pathetic.

Since deleting an account also appears to be amongst the missing features, I seem to be stuck with it for now. What is to become of it, no one can yet know.

Edit: Oh, apparently a "basic" $10 a year membership isnt enough to post items for sale either. I actually laughed out loud when I read that one, LOL! This really seems like some sort of parody of internet forums.
And yet, here you are. And gold now. Welcome aboard, me limey mate.

No offense meant, and I agree with some of what you posted. But, for the price of admission 30 bones is a hell of a lot of benefit for a year. No ads, get to sell stuff, send PMs, enter giveaways, sometimes a stipulation of buying exclusive knives.

Gold does have its privileges. Come for the knives, stay for the brotherhood.

I couldn’t agree more. I’ve been a lurker on several forums but this one got me participating pretty quick. Once I did I started enjoying it even more. There’s some really good people here and if you don’t know where to post, find a simple thread and hang out there for a bit. For me it was just “what are you carrying today”. You’ll get the gist.

I don't mean to be preachy, but those of us who have been here awhile know that sometimes new members don't always receive much in the way of patience and understanding. Sometimes it's easy to jump on those who are new to knives, know less than we do, or simply have different tastes in knives. Sometimes criticism comes a little too easy on internet forums.

Remember that we were all new to knives once, we didn't know anything. And if we were lucky someone with a generous amount of patience and understanding was willing to take the time to teach us, even if it meant pushing their patience and understanding to the limit.

How many of us can say that every knife purchase we made was a smart one. How many of us at some point have bought a knife simply because we thought it was "cool", or "tactical", etc. How many of us have bought knives from questionable companies with silly marketing. I doubt that any here are perfect.

In my humble opinion, this forum should be about more than personal entertainment, it should also be a place to provide guidance to those who are new to this "hobby", even if that means exerting a bit more patience and understanding. After all, how would we want to be treated if we were new here? In the end, we can teach new members a lot more with patience and understanding than with insults and criticism.

Of course, if you've been here a while then you better have thick skin, because you're fair game ;).

Just my thoughts.

UPDATE: It's been over 8 years since I started this thread, and I thought it was time for an update.

When I started this thread back in 2012, new members were sometimes treated a bit rough. But things have changed since then. These days most active members are eager to help new members. So I don't want you to get the impression that you're entering a lions den where the members are just waiting to bite your head off. I think you'll find the vast majority of members to be friendly and helpful. So welcome, and enjoy :).
I haven’t been on in years today I decided to get back on , I'm glad to be back in the community

Thanks
Keith

Hello everyone, another Noob/Newby here from Southwest Florida. My fascination with knives started when I was six years old and it quickly got me in trouble when I 'played' with my Dad's razor sharp knife and cut my thumb bad enough to need my first five stitches from Dr. Ostling. That was in '63, sixty years ago, and it was a valuable lesson learned early in life. I wasn't allowed to own my own knife until I joined Boy Scouts six years later, where I learned to respect tools like sharp knives. Anyhow, until recently my collecting knives consisted of buying an inexpensive one (mostly Case and Buck) every few years and throwing my old one in the catch-all drawer. I started a small collection after I retired five years ago and it's now grown to 22 (mostly Benchmade's) and my wife is starting to question whether I have an obsession or not. Anyhoo, I appreciate the comradery that I see on this forum and I look forward to exploring the many years of back dated posts and future forum interaction. Cheers!
