We were all new here once

I've been on various forums for about 30 years now, not as much recently. I've always thought it was a bit more annoying to some people than it ought to be when somebody brings up a topic that's already been discussed a great deal by the "regulars." Granted, new folks to the topic would hopefully search out threads on the subject; however, regardless how "bored" some are of a topic, we have to remember that there are always new folks, hopefully, who've just discovered the joy in some particular new knife, gun, or whatever, and want to engage people on the topic. The "nonvirtual" version of this excessive annoyance is the old guy at the real gun & knife show or in the gun shop that continually turns people off on the hobby due to his being an old curmudgeon and having no time for anybody other than experienced experts or folks who have already thrown down their money. We're all that way at times, I'm sure, although I try to check myself. I'm fairly ignorant myself about knives, so I can sympathize.
I’ll add, as a new guy. If / when you find the right thread..reading through a decade of conversation to find info. makes my one good eye cross.
P.S…welcome to all y’all…or yuns, if you’re from Pittsburg (Picksbuurg)

Hello everyone. I joined this forum back in 2013 and think this is my very first post. I believed I joined the forum when I was looking for my first "nice" knife, and purchased a Small Sebenza 21 knife then. I only purchased ~ 4 knives from 2013 to late last year (Kershaw Leek, Small Sebenza 21, Manix 2..which I lost, and a Benchmade 940-1 with a bit of modifications). However, I really REALLy got into knives since December of last year after I stopped by a local knife shop and played around with a butterfly trainer. Then splurged on a few nice butterfly knives with live blades which then transitioned to folding knives....purchased 25 additional knives since. Expensive hobby :).

Hello BF - 2 week white belt here and in the few buying interactions I’ve had here both in person and virtual, members have been super cool.

My name is Hellasharp and I’m an addict. I’ve bought about 15 knives in the past 4 weeks and am running out of places to hide them from my wife and kids. It’s already becoming a problem and am kinda glad that there are various paywalls here so I don’t get ahead of myself.

My fascination with knives started many years ago as I’m a hobby leatherworker and thought I was badass in sharpening my own Blanchard clicking knife on a $10 ‘diamond’ stone from harbor freight. I went out and bought what I thought was the pinnacle of knife making at the time- a BM585 in 154c and absolutely destroyed the edge so I buried the diamond stone and ego in my back yard

Fast forward to Feb’23, I’m bored AF and came across a CIVIVI ad and long story short, was fascinated by how much overseas manufacturing has improved over time. That led to about 8 Chinese, a few spydies, ZT, Lionsteel, couple of OTFs and some more Chinese knives later and here I am posting a diatribe.

BF: tell me what American made knife I should buy next. Must be:

<$200
In the realm of EDC
Widely Available or not, I stalk the for sale section pretty obsessively
Not liner lock bc I have so many already
So far I only have a zt0350, leek, chive(?) Bugout, PM2 & 3

See you out there

:)

Welcome to Bladeforums Hellasharp. You've come to the right forum for knives, and the wrong forum for saving money 😁 .

As for the American made knife you're looking for, my suggestion would be that you start a thread in General Discussion (this sub-forum) and ask, providing as much criteria as you can think of. People will be more than happy to make recommendations. If you don't already know, to start your own thread just click on the orange "Post Thread" button that appears in the upper right hand corner of the screen on the first page of every sub-forum.

Best of luck to you. Both in finding the knife you want, and trying not to go broke 😁.

Thanks and will do! And yes, the saving money part will be an issue but I’m not worried now that I’ll save 15% on car insurance by switching to _____

:D

On a serious note: I have a hard $200/ limit until summer!

I guess this is as good of a thread as any to say "Hello" from the Pacific Northwest. I discovered this forum while looking for information on 'First Production Run' Bark River knives. I decided to break down and buy a proper hunting knife a few weeks ago, ending up with an L.T. Wright Northern Hunter.

I've really enjoyed spending a few hours digging around your forum, and look forward to going further down the knives rabbit hole. As far as how new guys are treated - I was a programmer when the internet became accessible to all back in the 1990's, so I've seen how discussion forums have evolved, and I always expect a mix of great, not-so-great, and unpredictable :)

*edited to remove the BRK question.

Hey guys. I'm new here (not so new in knives and edc however). Nice to meet you all.
I'm in NYC and actually I'm new in the city as well. Do you know if we have any local knife enthusiasts community here in NYC or just a group of guys who like knives, hiking, fishing etc? It would be great to meet some friends and share the hobby.
My name is Tim, live in Brooklyn.

Hi Guys, I live in a little Ohio town called North Lima. It is situated pretty much right between Cleveland OH and Pittsburgh PA. When I was growing up in the late 70's and 80's all boys/guys had a knife. At that time it was typically a Buck or Shrade carried on your belt. I continued buying knives throughout my life; mostly Gerber, SOG, Kershaw. Anything that looked interesting at WalMart. Then, one day a few years ago, I bought a Spyderco Endura at a garage sale. This was the first knife that I really enjoyed, it was more than a toy. It carried beautifully, sharpened easily, and held its edge. That was the knife that got me hooked. Since then my interest and collection has increased and my bank account has decreased. While researching various lock types, blade steels, blade shapes, etc. I always would have my search's bring me to BladeForums. Thanks for all of the information you guys have shared. I felt it was time to actually join and become part of it. I currently edc a Spyderco Shaman, but it changes places with few other knives, depending on the day or situation. I still carry the Endura I bought at that garage sale. It is my work knife.

Well, you got to start somewhere so here I am guys. I'm not new to knives, knife sharpening or forums but I am new here. I've peeked in here a few times to get some info but never registered.
Glad to be here and the main reason I'm here is to learn.

So without further ado, introducing from small town Alabama, a 53 years old whose got a hard on for anything knife related. Put your hands together for me, Dennis.

I'm a 70 year old from rural Alabama. Like most, I've carried a knife all my life but never looked at knives as a hobby or something to collect until recently. And honestly, it's a little out of control. I've already learned a lot from lurking but I'm happy to have signed up.

Welcome! Good to have you here. Enjoy!

Never too late! But hope your 401k is well padded and already taxed. Welcome from a fellow noob!

My new best friend 😊 Thank you for the welcome! I’m 72 in June and still shoot straight! I love the modern pocket knives but was too distracted by guitars to notice until a couple months ago. I’ve gone hog wild in the last two months and thank the Lord for my ability to do so.
