and having to head to the opthomologist as soon as they open their doors this morning. I had my safety glasses on while grinding some cpm154 last night and a piece about the size of Mount Everest snuck in behind the glasses somehow. About to kill me all night long.

I think from now on I will just wear a bag over my entire head when grinding. I always wear protection...can't figure out how this happened.

Oh well....have a nice Tuesday.

Always a good idea to wear a full face shield when working around flying sparks/objects!!!

It happened to me, man it hurts. I use a full eye protectant--the kind that totally encloses your eyes. I need tho get a full sheild ,Gas mask looking one.--marekz

The ONLY time I ever got something in my eye that required medical attention was when I wore safety glasses over top of my eye glasses.

Everyone that works with metal should have an eye magnet in their first aid kit. On several ocassions I have been able to remove particles of steel from my eye with this device. The sooner you get it out of your eye the less you scratch the eye.
I purchased mine from a supplier of industrial first aid supplies. On one end there is a magnet and on the other there is a monofilament loop for non magnetic particles.
With the magnet end you only need to get it close to the particle and the chunk jumps off your eye onto the magnet, giving instant relief. The other end works well for sawdust.
This device doesn't negate the use of proper safety glasses, etc. but as the stories show there is no fool proof way to protect your eyes. The device may save a trip to the doctor and may help to minimize damage.

Had this happen too, I was stupid and tried to do something fast with out protection. Sucked something fierce, especially because the pain didn't hit me until day 2, I thought it would work it's way out naturally. The night of day 2 I could not close my eye it hurt so bad. When I got the eye doc that sliver of 01 had rusted! Not only did he have to pull out the steel, he also had to use this dentist like tool to grind out the rust....TWICE!!!!!

I never go near a piece of steel with out protection now. Alden, I think I will get an eye magnet as well, thanks for the advice.

if you ever have an mri make sure to let them know about your steel follies, a little piece left in and it will be a horror show.

A poorboy version of the magnet is a Q-tip and a nylon foot sock or even a pair of pantie hose. Wet the Q-tip and squeeze it out, then stick it in the nylon and pull it tight. Wipe it over the piece of metal and 99 times out of a 100 it will pull the metal out. The nylon is strong enough to hold the metal and the Q-tip adds a little cushion.

If it's not better today, probably won't be tommorow either. Piece of advice don't wait a week to go to the eye doctor. Don't ask how I know!

I am a talk show host and have had the opportunity to interview an eye surgeon about eye injurys. On protective lenses he said you must have a cheek weld all across the bottom of the lenses and the area between the lenses must be solid.

When looking for shooting glasses (had a 45 blow up on me) I was amazed on how many shooting glasses have large openings below the lens. When getting protective glasses for knife making (I am only a student) I looked all over till I found some in a machinist store... with 2x bifocals to boot.

Anyway I might have a strange facial structure but I found it tuff to find good fitting protective lenses. I did find a drop down clear plastic full face shield and use that when a lot of metal is to be ground, but darn, I need a little bit of magnification these days.

Hope your outcome is good and I am sure the Dr will have some advice for you... please share it with us..

Everything turned out ok after my visit...the Doc told me "That sliver beat your eye up pretty bad, but you will be OK." It turned out the sliver was stuck to my eyelid and everytime I blinked, it scratched my eye....painful.

Thanks for the good words everyone.

I had to have this done twice!!!

BOTH times I had safety glasses on.

I highly recommend these... in fact I need to order some more as I've worn out two pair of them.

I have been wearing googles over my reading glasses and and breathing repirator . Thats why ive changed over to a fullface mask repirator. It will fully protect me from all the shit going on . Grinding steel is serious stuff, for all you guys ive seen in video s grinding with knothing for protection. Sooner or later it will happen, Im so so glad your ok . kellyw

I wear the semi disposable masks with them.

I have had several of the half-masks, and even have a nice full face respirator.... but I hate them and found myself leaving them in the cabinet more often than grabbing them (they make me sweat like crazy and are a pain in the neck).

I know the dozen or so use disposables are not the level of protection as a high quality half-face.... but they are FAR BETTER than nothing at all.

This is an issue of theory versus reality. FOR ME in MY shop. ;) :)

Nick, do the goggles change your vision or are they really clear? I've had safety glasses in the past that as you moved your head you'd get a slight blur. I found some great glasses that don't fog and are really clear made by Nemisis. I agree with you on the face mask and I wear my disposables but hated the canister mask and wouldn't wear it.

I know Nick won't have this problem and some of the older guys may not either, but steel and grit gets in your hair and then can latter get in your eye. I have had this happen. I work with metal for a living. I have had a piece get in my eye while showering. Good idea to brush out your hair and eyebrows after grinding.

If you do get something in your eye and can not get it out go to a DR right away. It will start to rust if steel and the rust is a problem. Dr will have to burr it out and it really sucks as well as not being good on the eye.
