Week Long 22 Rimfie Water Immersion Test

Thanks for posting this info and for carrying out the tests. It's good to know such things.

I am gonna do my own test with federal automatch. I have 6 rounds of federal automatch sitting in a bottle of water, I will leave them in over night, then test. I also shook the bottle, and took 1 round out after about 10 minutes, and it still fired. I also have a couple rounds sitting in my home gun cleaner/solvent, to if the seal can be dissolved.

no problem. it seems cci is better than the other stuff i tested. the connection between case and bullet is the weakpoint obviously.

I have some of these:

They are for food storage and have a rubber seal to keep the food fresh, they should work equally well for keeping their contents dry in a Bug Out Bag. They are available at supermarkets here and pretty cheap. They come in a variety of sizes and shapes so they can be used to hold all sorts of stuff.

I would assume that there are plenty of similar containers from various manufacturers available. I'm sure they would be good for keeping stuff dry like: Ammo, first aid kits, fire starting kits, etc.

Thanks for the test and the report, I am sure some that listen will benefit one day, I know that tonight I will be dipping all the 22 ammo that rides in my pickup and saddle bags.

Recently I purchased 2,000 rounds of 22 ammo, all stored in boxes and jars for over 30 years. Some of the old lead bullet ammo were duds, but they were so corroded I had to clean them up so they could chamber.

Most all of them shot, some weaker than others, but fun for a couple of days.

Are you going to dip it in paraffin??

Probably bees wax as I have a lot of it from the bees on our ranch and get about 100 lbs of it a year. If I did not have the bees wax I would use paraffin.

I used to make bullet lube out of Crisco and bees wax, it worked well will try that if the bees wax does not work.

Cool man!

Today I tested untreated brown ramsets. 3 out of 5 fired. It would be super easy to treat those.

Hey BF, did a little more informal testing.

nice three day soak- dropped into a coffe can.

Remington Yellow Jacket: 1 out of 5 fired.
Aguilla Super Maximum: 5 out of 5 fired.
Aguilla Super Colibri: 5 out of 5 fired.
CCI Stinger: 5 out of 5 fired.

This has been a very informative thread...thanks for doing the leg work!

You've only confirmed all my suspicions about remington rimfire ammo. None of my .22LR's like it ... I will shoot it all up (well, the rounds that don't misfire anyway...:grumpy:) and be done with it.

I am not surprized that CCI would be the most waterproof. It is the only brand of .22 lr ammo I have seen where the bullet fits tightly in the case. With all the other brands I can easily twist the bullet around in the case. I like the CCI Velocitors.

What about 12g sheels? Anyone thought of dipping those in wax to seal up the crimp? Some of the Remington shells look liike they come that way from the factory.

I've noticed this also. First thing that I thought of when reading this thread.

I wonder if the 22 mag ammo is the same in results.

.22 Mag has a slight crimp to the case, into the heel of the bullet, so it should fare much better.

CCi and Aguilla ammunition is so much more consistent (in accuracy and craftsmanship) than the cheap bulk ammo used for plinking.

The results don't surprise me at all.
