This weekend's assignment comes at the request of Caine, who on duty in Iraq. Caine said he was going to try and post something he'll do up and he wants to see everybody's traps. He doesn't want to see some picture of a trap you dug up in your photobucket. HE WANTS TO SEE THE TRAP YOU BUILT THIS WEEKEND!!!!

Okay, I'm off as of tomorrow morning doing a little bluegill hunting and then a workshop on Tues/Wed in TO. I'll try to poke my head in and provide some SHOUTING to spurn you guys on. WE WANT TO SEE YOUR WEEKEND TRAPS! I'm going to make mine, are you?

Please - somebody keep this page alive this weekend. I will feel bad if it goes dark and finds itself on page 4 by Sunday. I will have to start calling everybody bad names and whining and such - you don't want to see that happening. Nor do you want Caine coming back from the Desert and cleaning the dust from his toes by removing his foot from your .......(ahem....).

So without adieu;

POST YOUR TRAPS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ok guys, stays posted for the next hour, I will have up some trap making, just got back with a load of wood, and some stuff to work with, so.......

Ok, so the first thing that needs to be done, is choosing a nice day,
P4170008.jpg

Next, we need to find some suitable.

P4170009.jpg

Next, we need to get everything together.
P4170013.jpg

Next, we need to make the notches. Take your first stick, which I made this time about 8" long, at one end I made a angled notch.
P4170015.jpg

In the middle of it, I made a notch.
P4170016.jpg

At the other end, I made a point.
P4170025.jpg

Now, we take another stick, the same length, or a little shorter. This needs to have another notch in the middle, and a Angled top. The first two sticks should be able to stick together, and need to be very neat and tidy.

Continued.

Now, we need to make sure they stick together well, then we need to make sure our first notch from the first stick is sticking up the right way.

Then, with everything together you will have something that will look like this.

I think most of you have seen how a figure four is made, if not a quick google search will bring it up, but its just that easy.

Great pics FONLY!!!

I tried to make my first figure four trap today and failed horribly. I was close but I just couldnt get it set by myself. Oh well, practice makes perfect!! Im gonna keep on trying some more tomorrow. When I get it figured out I'll post a few pics.

Seriously Ill post something for real before the weekend is out:D

Yay, I finally had time to contribute to 1 of these!!

Here are a few basics.

Forgive the bright white cordage. I wanted to use cheap stuff and it shows well on camera. I didn't trim any of the tag ends on my knotts and I used the white cordage for the snare instead of wire since this is just practice.....

here is mine:

nothing to look at, but functional. i dont know its name, but i saw raymears use it once. i made it with the pictured fiddleback bushcrafter from the passaround.

Ok back. Thanks everyone these look awesome. Going to try and do one today myself.

.

Hey
Fonly,

With that notch fitting so tight and well together, is there an issue with making it a hair trigger?

Ok this one didnt turn out super great.:o I needed to make the stakes longer so they could be driven in straight so the "pencil" wouldve rolled out easier. Its the first one Ive tried, frankly its my first spring snare. Mostly Ive practiced deadfalls. I learned lots about how to tweak the next one.;)

You can see the trigger takes a little too much pressure, I dont want the animal to get caught and its thrashing to set it off, I want the first tug to trip it. Live and learn.
