Weekend backpack trip, what an adventure...

So maybe the first sign of things to come, was when I broke Boomer's scale at the trail head...:jerkit:

Anyways, My wife and I had a chance to go on a backpacking trip with Boomstick and his girlfriend this weekend. Big basin again, we started at headquarters and headed for Waddell beach. About 12 to 14 miles depends on who you ask. If you ask me, I think we ended up going 12 the first day, then an easy two to the beach and our pickup car.

Well rain was in the forecast, so we were prepared for that, but noone said it was going to friggin storm on us. About two hours before we got to came to our campsite, it started to come down, so out with the rain gear. We got to camp and quickly set up the tarp, so we could pitch our tents under it. Then with another tarp underneath it, we had a nice cozy common area.

After the tarp and tents were pitched, Boomer had to go and find a tick buried halfway into his neck! So we spent some time getting that sucker out, thank goodness for the tick tweezers Boomer had.

After that fiasco we had quite a pleasant evening under our tent, staying dry. By the time we went to bed it was coming down in truck fulls, and continued to poor all night. We even got a flash of lightning and a crack of the loudest thunder I've ever heard.

It was a relief to hear the rain was getting lighter as daylight started to break. So we got up for a nice breakfast under the tarp again... ... Then it started to HAIL!!! I just happened to be taking a morning walk along the creek that was in our backyard when I started getting pummeled, but I braved the ice balls to get some pics for you all.

Even with all the excitement we had an EXCELLENT time! Nothing like spending time in God's beautiful country with good company and a smore or two.

Here are some of the pics I took, hopefully Boomstick will chime in soon, as he got more pics of our camp than I did.

Awww. Aren't they cute!

Danged ticks! At least we had some shelter.

Finally, about to enjoy some food!

Ran out of tent stakes, so we had to improvise a couple. Unfortunately the mud didn't allow a very good shot of the craftsmanship...

After everything was set up, I found this soggy thing in the mud. Hmmm maybe I should of read it at home...

Cool story, and nice pics! Call me crazy, but I actually like camping in inclement weather. Makes for a different wilderness experience.

The tics I can do without, though!

All the best,

- Mike

Edited to add: That last picture of the trees is terrific!

Now how about some animals.

Ran into a ton of the local newts, they go back and forth from the creeks.

Biggest bannana slug I've ever seen! When stretched out, it was longer than my knife!!!

A hawk, and even a coyote on our drive home.

Towards the end of the trail, looking back at the mountains we came from.

That looks like fun. I actually hiked that trail this last christmas break. We go rained on also.

It was quite a change for me because I am used to the more open dry areas of the sierra nevadas, that trail looked like a rain forest.

Great trip! Went backpacking in the exact opposite conditions in New Mexico this past week--I've got the sunburn to prove it. Some great lush scenery where y'all hiked.

I will camp in many conditions, but lots of rain isn't fun. Been hailed on, too--at 10,000 ft in Wyoming. Thunder is VERY loud up there!

Glad to see you had a fun and safe trip, and good to see some forum members getting together.

I had an absolute blast, even with the rain. And yes, it is a different experience. As long as you aren't soaked it's kinda cozy.

Edited to add: Thanks!

Great pics! You guys have some beautiful country out that ways! I hope to see it soon.

I sleep like a baby in storms... provided of course the tent doesn't leak. That pic with the instructions is priceless :D

I'm jealous of your pics... I've heard coyotes many times but have yet to see one in person. Sneaky lil critters...

AWESOME!!!! We saw the hail here too this morning, that must have been fun being outside when it was coming down :)

Looks like you and Boomer and the ladies had an excellent time. Can't wait to see Boomer's pics.

I agree with Mentor about camping in inclement weather. Is this a Canadian thing?

Stingray, nice pictures and putting up a tarp first, then setting up your tents  100%!

I don't backpack anymore (found you could carry more beer in a canoe :o ), but seeing your pictures brings back memories. :D

Doc

Thanks guys, it was fun, and I do love this area. Hopefully Boomers pics will show up soon.

"It's storm'n, eh. Let's go camping!" Canadians... :D

And even more in a car, :Dbut that kinda limits you on were you can go and what you can see. That's why I'm so jazzed about getting into backpacking.
