Not sure if anyone would like to play but thinking that a lot of us would love to get together and hang out / share skills off line but logistically - it's not gonna happed in most cases.

So I thought we could have a little fun by having a series of competitions - based on the honor system.

How about we start off with a timed firemaking drill.

Materials:
Knife / Hard wood / Firesteel.
To make it interesting, No Fat wood /Birch bark / etc. PJ balls / synthetics - only the three items mentioned.

Game:
See how long it take to get a fire going that will boil water (rolling boil of a minimum of one cup water) in the metal container of choice..

Rules:

1) Only knife, Hardwood ,and Firesteel/Flint rod can be used.
2) Only one piece of wood can be used for the exercise. (that way we can have an excuse to baton :D)
3) The container used to boil the water must hold at least one cup of water.

4) Time starts when we start actual work on the wood & ends when the water hit's a rolling boil.
4) It's the honor system, so be honorable :D
5) When you post your time - please give us some detail, what knife/wood used etc.
6) Winner will send me their address info via PM, or email to barabbas@wirefire.com & choose the next competition/rules etc. so we can keep the fun going

Deadline:

Time must be posted by Sunday (10/26) at 12am. (originally set for 10/19 - but did not give most folks enough time - so wanted to remedy that)

Of course, if you have a way to record and give a video link that would be awesome so we can see your skills in action;) - but not necessary.

Prize:
Winner takes all.
I'll send a decent sized Wild Ginseng root harvested this season from good ol WV - not to pretty to look at :barf:, but makes an interesting cup of tea for which I can provide instructions if desired.

Who knows, if everyone likes this, and we keep it going maybe we can get a sticky going and start posting the top 3 winners in each category etc.

Let's have some fun!!!!!!!

sounds awsome! i am out of town currently but should be home in time to get in my entry. the one peice of wood idea seems like it will be fun, but somewhat challenging since i usually use shredded dry grass.

That would be great, unfortunately I work weekends, and my next day off is Tuesday, in which is allready spoken for.(pumpkin picking with the family) I will however do it on Thursday for the hell of it.

Great idea bro!

crap. i just realized that sunday meant this coming one. i wont be in town, so i guess ill be siting this round out. good luck for all those participating though!

oo, I do this tomorow. its 10pm here, I bet in 1 min I can get a fire going, about the boiling I dont know

This is fun. I will try tomorrow. I don't need any reward. Just a set schedule for doing stuff is enough for me to get my butt outta the chair and start practicing. We should start an exercise thread too....hey maybe I will!

Hi All, - sorry for the screw up on the time frame - I changed it to give all a week - Deadline is 10/26.

Feel free to make multiple attempts, all that matters is lowest timeframe by the deadline :D

Hmm, may be a good chance to give the ratmandu a workout, or possibly the bushman?

Liam -If you have time - please try both :D
This is a great opportunity for us to get great info on a bunch of different knives / techiques and finally get the low down on which ones really shine when they are put to the test

Can I use Jeff Randall's new steel?

1st Run for me is 16:59 :barf:
Using Busse BATAC & Locust Wood, wind was blowing a lot tonight.
I boiled the water in a standard camp percolator.

Sure not the knifes fault, or the firesteel -just got in a little to much hurrry with getting the initial fire going, and should have had more kindling up front.

I set the perc directly on the fire, and since I did a poor job in preparation, had to remove it and put down more wood..

Lesson learned on this run - spend an extra minute or 2 in batonning some smaller kindiling, I thjink If I would have done that would have saved me at least 2-3 minutes in getting it to a rolling boil.

Hope to give it another shot over the next few days.

Well, I gave it the ole college try, but my wood was still a bit wet, so even with some dryer lint I couldn't get it going with the firesteel (I know, I disqualified myself :D). The wind kept kicking up too and putting my little blaze out. Eventually a paper towel and a match got her fired up. I figured at this point I was out of the running, so I decided to go another route.

Gonna give it another try later this week after things dry out. Great idea though! Thanks for thinking of it and putting it forward!

Keep Tryin Shore - you'll get it  If you can get to the interior wood should find some dry stuff, as long as it was not totally saturated. - great effort - that chili looks so good!

I need a little tast of that to get the taste out of my mouth too, since ol' Southern had to kick our tails :D

Southern B - what can I say ;) Your the man!!!!!
Hope somebody can give you a little competition - It sure hasn't been me -yet that is.... Hee, hee, hee.

Man, this looks like fun! Too bad I'm in the middle of moving right now. I look forward to the next contest though.
