Weekend Contest through Sunday 12a EST

How do you baton with only one piece of wood allowed? Use your water pot?

I would prefer it if you would, maybe I'll have a chance to come in 2nd :D

Just kiddin' - I took for granted that folks would baton with another piece of wood.

Sorry I did not clarify better.

I know it's past the due date but I might try anyway if it's not too windy out, my dad wants me to chop up some firewood anyway.

14:30 or so, no second hand on my alarm clock. Used the ratmandu, very good battoner but not so great at slicing.
I used my farmers saw to strike sparks, and actually had to use some jute twine like flower pot stuff for tinder, wasted a minute or two trying to get sparks to catch on the wood shavings. With a better slicer I could have had a much better chance to catch on the shavings.

2nd Run - 12:59

Tried it in the dark tonight (did have a flash light though) Used a SAR - (first time using it - man it is killer!! - finally the perfect grind - to me any way -on a Busse straight from the factory!!), and the only issues I had were by not having the light positioned right, got in to much of a hurry again and knocked my shavings around like three (yes I'm an idiot - 3 times) and had to build back up my pile - did I mention I did it 3 times.....

I hope to try again later this week God willing.

My time was 16:55

The wood was maple I think, from a dead fallen tree.

I got the fire real quick and batoninig and fuzz stick didn't take long at all.
That is due to the scary sharp David Farmer Bushcraft

I think I had my cup too far from the fire, I will try again soon.

I wanted to make a video, but the battery in my camcorder never took a charge:mad:

So here are a couple of pics.

i blew it when i did mine. it took me nearly an hour. that darn sprinkler system gets everything wet. the one peice of wood thing was a little challenging. good job on all that have entered and good luck to those who havent yet.

finally loaded the pics.
I may as well used the wet stuff instead of the 2x4 as there was so many knots in it I broke my baton on the second swing.

Alright it appears I've won though I must say I think I cheated by using a softwood :o . I am happy to set the next challenge. Using the first as a template here it is.

Game: Distilling salty water
See how long it take to get a fire going that will boil the salted water in the metal container of choice and then distill it using the foil and a wet bandana to another container.

Materials:
Saw / Knife / Wood (as much as you need) / Firesteel / 1 x Metal cup/bottle/ 2 x measuring containers / 2’ x 1’ aluminum foil / cotton bandana / 2 tablespoons salt / water

To make it interesting, No Fat wood /Birch bark / etc. PJ balls / synthetics

Rules:

1) Only the following can be used.;
Saw
Knife
Wood (as much as you need)
Firesteel
2 x Metal cup/bottle
2’ x 1’ aluminum foil
cotton bandana
2 tablespoons salt
Water

2) The container used to boil the water must hold 1 cup of water and 1 tablespoon of salt.

3) The container used to wet the bandanna the water must hold 1 cup of water and 1 tablespoon of salt.

4) Time starts when we start actual work on the wood & ends when you have 1/8 a cup of distilled water

4) It's the honor system, so be honorable

5) When you post your time - please give us some detail, what knife/wood used etc.

6) Winner will choose the next competition/rules etc. so we can keep the fun going.

Deadline:
Time must be posted by Sunday (11/2) at 12am EST.

Of course, if you have a way to record and give a video link that would be awesome so we can see your skills in action - but not necessary.

Prize:
A small but very valuable bag with a little chunk of knowledge in it, that can be carried anywhere and can contain as much as you wish to put in it, extremely light and robust, though it may deteriorate with extreme age.

AND you get bragging rights!!!

Winner takes all.

Let's have some fun!!!!!!!

I tried this yesterday with my Stomper Clip Point Hunter. I was able to baton the oak I had, cut off small curls like a fuzz stick, and scrape "sawdust" off the wood with the spine. Knife did a great job. Unfortunately I could never get any of this to ignite using my firesteel. The wood was dry. What did I do wrong? How did the successful ones get their wood to light?

Horny -

If your confident the wood was really dry, you might want to hold the firesteel tip down in the tinder (pressing on the same surface that you have the tinder on) so when you scrape off the sparks they can be the hottest when they hit.
Just a half inch or so can be the difference in how hot the sparks are when they hit & the difference bewtween fire or not.

If you are already doing that, my next question would be how big of a pile of saw dust did you have, and was it possibly on a damp surface, or was it damp outside when you tried - possibly getting moisture in the sawdust before you had a chance to try with your firesteel?

Thanks,

sp
