weekend out in the forest

that's not camping I don't see an A/C anywhere:!!:D

Seriously though, regardless of the heat you had water to cool off in and plenty of trees to keep the sun from baking you..and apparently had a good time..its always nice to get into the thick even if you're only 9 feet from your truck:thumbup:

Those are some colorful grass hoppers, they do look like lures...

Great pics TTD. I love TEXAS with all my heart but I wont go camping in her summers :) I've never seen hoppers like those. Fearless and massive they are.

I'm jealous, looks like y'all had a great time at the lake! I've seen some large insects before but those crickets...I really think there was a secret radioactive leak somewhere in Texas for those things to look like that!!! I used to complain about the summer heat being here in northern central california where 100+ in the summer is a normal thing. This summer though, the warmest it's been has been about 85, and damn cold at night. So much for global warming... Glad to see y'all made it back in one peice.

what part of the park was this in? me and my gf go out there every now and then but i havent found a decent place like this to camp.

there were carp 3 and 4 ft long flopping 3 feet off the shore and during the nite fliping up and hitting the trees to knock bugs out to eat. some big catfish too.

not to mention the 40 bezillion frogs having an all night orgy 10 feet from my hammock.

the area is pretty easy to get to, driving west from I-45 you turn left on lake stubbelfield rd and then take the first left onto a gravel road foll it back into the woods always staying to the left and about 2 or 3 miles back on a dirt track you dead end in the lake thats where we camped.

take it easy

shotgunner,
Other than these two pics, is there anything else you can tell me/us about your sleeping setup? Materials needed, how much paracord, basic design (maybe a link to a website that already lists this), or even just the name of the general setup so I can do the searching myself. It looks intriguing and something I'd like to try myself next week as it's been Texas-hot up here in Canada all summer and normal tent is just overkill in this heat and humidity.

Also, how do you fare with humidity/dew when you wake up in the morning? Aren't you soaking wet?

Thanks to all you guys for the great shots.

I'll let Shotgunner correct me if I'm wrong, but it looks like a GI issue mosquito net with enough cordage to run between the trees on both sides of the net. The sticks just spread the cordage and net apart, so it drapes in more of a box shape instead of all of the net wanting to fall straight down and lay on top of you.

The first time I used my jungle hammock I used a very similar system with the sticks.

hi, mike strung a tarp over the netting.

as for waking up wet, we all did just from sweat and humidity.

Yup, the yellow rope in the top of the first pic was my ridgeline for the tarp.

As for the net, it was a USGI style mosquito net. The paracord is just strung through the loops on the netting and around the trees. The saplings are cut to width and used as spanners to keep the netting to shape.

And the "floor" is just another tarp folded to size with the netting tucked under it.

Keeps the worst of the creepy crawlies off while you sleep and the mosquitos at bay.

Humidity wasn't a problem as I was completely saturated at all times from my own sweat anyway and the tarp keeps the dew from being a problem.

I am just glad it was hot so you 3 did not havwe to spoon for warmth......not saying yall did not spoon....but at least it was not for warmth

TexasTonyDobbs-

Hey man nice post, and right on time too. My wife and I just decided to go camping somewhere near Sam Houston National Forest on Labor Day weekend. So far our plans are to tent camp near Double Lake. From everything I've heard and read, this seems like a great area. I'm looking forward to checking out the hiking and biking trails while were there. Maybe do a little fishing too. I know its going to be hot...but what else is new. Hope the rain holds out too!
