weekend out in the forest

TexasTonyDobbs-

Hey man nice post, and right on time too. My wife and I just decided to go camping somewhere near Sam Houston National Forest on Labor Day weekend. So far our plans are to tent camp near Double Lake. From everything I've heard and read, this seems like a great area. I'm looking forward to checking out the hiking and biking trails while were there. Maybe do a little fishing too. I know its going to be hot...but what else is new. Hope the rain holds out too!

grab a spot near the lake to catch a breeze the deeper you go into the woods ,the hotter and no air movement ....

hi, mike strung a tarp over the netting.

as for waking up wet, we all did just from sweat and humidity.

That is almost how we were taught to set up a shelter when I went to JOTC and a few other survival schools while in the service.

What we did though, was cut bamboo or a sapling that was just a tad longer than the two eyelets in each corner of the poncho where you would normally use tie downs. Do this on both ends. The bamboo eliminated the need for tie downs at each corner as it holds the poncho straight out.

Then used 550 or bungee cords in the eyelets in the middle and tied the poncho between two trees. You don't need a ridge line.

Then tie your mosquito bar to the bamboo and let it hang down.

Tuck the hanging mosquito bar under your foam mat and nothing gets inside.

Very easy and very quick to set up and no more looking for tie downs for four corners. This is my main shelter when I go to the jungle or anywhere when it's warm.

102 degrees and you had a campfire going? You all are just plain nuts! Looks like you had a blast. That is the biggest grasshopper I have ever seen btw - a whopper!

Awesome pics guys! Those grasshoppers are huge! Nothing like having tree frogs rain on you in the dark eh?

Man, those grasshoppers are crazy large!

Tony, you got that pack from PM66 right? It used to be mine, glad to see it getting used :) It was a pretty darn comfy pack.

That looks like some good camping I miss being down in Texas. When I was a litle kid I spent a lot of time in Guadalupe river state park. TTD,Have you ever spent much time in Big Bend? Its one of my favorite places ever.
