Is there any consensus on what the ideal weight range of a EDC should be. I'm not talking about people that need to carry for work.

I have a folder that is 4.9 ozs and it feels heavy after carrying it around for many hours. I didn't feel that way when I first purchased it but now I'm aware where it is all the time. Or is this a personal thing that one needs to work out for themselves.

Definitely personal.
I don't like pocket bricks, but I like a little weight. I prefer a Manix with G10 as opposed to the FRN light weight.

Or is this a personal thing that one needs to work out for themselves.

I would say its a personal thing for most folks. I carry knives from 3 to almost 8 oz. I carry 290 lbs on my 6'8" frame, a few oz here and there doesn't bother me. I don't recall ever saying "Gosh this knife feels heavy".

Definitely personal as well as what you are wearing. Jeans- then heavier up to 5 oz for me is OK but if wearing lighter pants/shorts/dress pants than no more than like 3.5 oz (my go to is the BM 940-1)

So basically something like:

Jeans = frame locks a bit heavier, 3.5 to 4 inch blade

Dress Pants/Shorts= Gentlemans carry, BM 940-1, CRK Mnandi/Small Seb, etc

Def personal. Anything above 5oz is a commitment, around 3oz is the sweet spot for me.

I prefer 12-14 ozs.

I go as light as I can, as I don't like pocket bulk. Sometimes the size-to-weight ratio has an impact on my perception of the weight, but for a larger folder I don't like any more than 4ish ounces. Smaller no more than 3 for me, but I think all of mine are even less, 1.5-2.5

However, a heavier knife does feel more substantial and has more mass behind it to do harder cutting, and I can appreciate something that feels solid for the fact that it feels solid.

I've obviously noticed the weight of my heavier knives as I handle them (mostly folders) but I've never once thought "boy this is heavy" when one was on my hip.

Personal. The heavier the better for me. I like to feel them. I love my pocket bricks!
Feeling too light is the reason I prefer to wear Benchies over Spidies. Despite having a drawer full of spiders =)
Mind you I just bought a CF folder (0452F), I'm eager to see if I'll like it.

I recently started carrying the ZT 0566. Specs say it is 5.3oz. The frame lock side is stainless steel, not titanium. I think I'd love this knife if it went on a diet and came in around 4 oz. It's pretty good the way it is, but lighter would be better, for sure.

For a folder, 6 oz. is usually my limit. I have one that is 11 oz., and it does not get much carry time at all. Too bad the handle wasn't aluminum/Titanium instead of stainless steel.

For fixed blades, I usually like blade thickness to be .190" or under. I do not get why people get a 13 inch blade with .320" thickness. Have fun toting that thing around in the woods!! Everyone has their preferences though!

I think it is very personal
It is a combination of weight, size/shape and balance of the knife as well as what clothes you wear and how you carry the knife

I like my EDC folder to be 3.5oz or less, but my limit is at 5 oz. for RFP carry.
As far as the Multitool it has to to be 7 oz. or less.

For a knife-MT hybrid (Kershaw, Leatherman, SAK) limit is 4 oz.

Hi. I agree with it being personal preference and a “situational based” choice :). As a curiosity, sometimes ago we had a workshop for junior product engineers about quality and the “weight”, “hefty” of some consumers goods was one of the most frequently chosen parameters in defining own perceived quality and deciding for one among other similar ones :D. Pretty interesting for me. As far as me, my folders range from 70 g to 170 g. I like them all but I also tend to appreciate some “weight” in my hand and pocket. Fair to say I work in an office environment which allows causal dressing and I spend most of my time on suppliers’ production floors, wearing work clothes, overalls, PPEs, safety boots, etc. so I don’t mind about carrying a more substantial folder .

I have gotten where I don't like anything over 4 oz but more than that I want smoother scales no rough G10 for me.

I feel it's purely personal and it likely will vary from time to time. You might carry a small light knife and one day you're doing something with the knife and it dawns on you that it would be a lot easier or as convenient with a larger folder (or vice versa).

Well this is the 4th time trying to post to my thread we'll see. Keep receiving a timed out message.

I figured I'd have to work it out. so I'm going to look for a EDC at 3 oz. It's like my guns, the time has passed carrying around a all steel 1911, Glock changed all that 20 yrs ago. Jim

I had the timing out problem yesterday. I suspect it is your internet provider's doing (slowing things down for their own reasons). On the EDC, a regular carry handgun does help put things into perspective especially if you pocket carry.

With knives, it just depends on what you cut and what you are comfortable carrying.
