Weight??

I've never weighed them, but now I know why I love my SHBM. Light light light.

Can't wait for the Bushy. Still gotta decide a color combo.

...
thats a huge difference in weight for an inch less

Yeah, the overall weight is similar but the difference in balance IS huge. That extra inch of length in a tad thinner, heavier blade, with less weight in the handle/tang, translates into a very significant difference in blade heavy balance and momentum in favor of the NMFBM, as Jerry says in the quote.

interesting thoughts Will.

mind showing some photos of this SHBM of yours, some in hand too?

Thanks, DM. You know there are a jillion SHBM photos in the archives--nothing special about this one that I can see.

With the BW being a little over 6 oz lighter and a bit longer than CGFBM, I can see why it will be more of a slasher.

Yeah, and at 6 oz heavier than a Basic 9 or a 12" machete, it will have some ooomph behind it. That thin 3/16" blade traveling with SHBM speed and weight should have penetration out the asterisk.*

So, the Mistresses (by approximate weight, descending):

* 32.0 oz - CG NMFBM
* 31.0 oz - FFBM
* 31.0 oz - FBM LE
* 27.6 oz - CG FBM with Micarta mags
* 26.0 oz - SHBM .270"
* 26.0 oz - BWM LE
* 23.0 oz - CG BWM with G-10
* 22.0 oz - CG BWM with Canvas Micarta
* 22.0 oz - SHBM .250" with 10 3/16" blade
* 21.0 oz - BM-E
* 19.0 oz - SHBM Coated

Still missing:

* NMFBM 1/13
* ZTBM
* ??

The bama clay cgNMFBM is 60 grams more than the regular cgNMFBM, and weighs about 34 oz.:eek:

19 oz for an SHBM sounds light. Any independent confirmation? Where's Cobalt when you need him?

Foo and Tony G have a few. So does Andre. IIRC, there was a lot of variety in SHBM thickness, no? I bet weights span a range.

I'll weigh my two tonight.

These are what mine weigh. Who has a NMFBM what weighs 32 oz.? I'm also not sure that 19 oz. SHBM weight is accurate.

29.1 oz - NMFBM, tan canvas, black blade
29.3 oz - NMFBM, black canvas, black blade
26.2 oz - CGFBM, std. black canvas, black blade
18.2 oz - ZTBME, tan canvas, sage blade

Good call, verpus. I broke out two of my coated CG NMFBM's, one micarta/coated @ about 29.6 oz and one G10/coated @ a little over 31.5 oz. on my 2 lb. postal scale. I also put an LE on the scale and it bottomed out, so that's obviously over 32 oz., and may have been what Jerry was referring to in the above reference--he didn't specify.

I think we're basically going through the same kind of exercise here that we did with calipers/thickness right after the NMFBM's started arriving, which showed some thickness differences within the same model. I remember some of the sheath makers commenting on blade thickness variation, which certainly could account for some weight variation as well.

Variations in Busse blade thickness and length within the same model over the years have been fairly common, as resinguy alluded to, so measuring several knives of the same model is a good idea, to get a feel for the range. :thumbup:
