Hey folks!

As an offshoot to the MYB (Move Your Butt) challenge, some of us in the general fitness thread came up with a BP challenge for those of us who do body weight and weight lifting exercises.

Goal is to accrue 50 Becker Strength Points (BSP) in the month of January.

Scoring:

200 heavy punching bag combos = 1BSP
100 light reps = 1 BSP
50 medium reps = 1 BSP
25 heavy reps = 1 BSP
15 very heavy reps = 1 BSP

Definitions:

Heavy punching bag combos: a set of at least 2 moves (ex jab and straight, jab roundhouse kick, etc) done sequentially.
Light rep: a rep that can be done 15+ times without resting. Most body weight exercises will fall into this category.
Medium rep: a rep that can be done up to 14 times, with reps 12-14 being challenging, and 15 near impossible without assistance.
Heavy rep: a rep that can be done 6 times, with reps 4-6 being very challenging, and 7 near impossible without assistance.
Very heavy: a rep that can be done twice, rep 3 impossible without assistance.

in other words

Light - 15+ reps
Medium - 7-14 reps
Heavy - 3-6 reps
Very Heavy - 1-2 reps

Post workout, tally up everything and see how many points you have. Tally everything DAY OF only; nothing done another day counts.

Example 1:

Back/ bicep routine
Back exercise 1: medium weight, 8 reps per set, 3 sets = 24 reps
Back exercise 2: medium weight, 8 reps per set, 3 sets = 24 reps
Back exercise 3: medium weight, 8 reps per set, 3 sets = 24 reps
Back exercise 4: medium weight, 8 reps per set, 3 sets = 24 reps

Bicep exercise 1:medium weight, 8 reps per set, 3 sets = 24 reps
Bicep exercise 1:medium weight, 8 reps per set, 3 sets = 24 reps
Bicep exercise 1:medium weight, 8 reps per set, 3 sets = 24 reps

Total 168 medium points

(168 medium points)/50 = 3.36 BP

This challenge is IN ADDITION to the MYB challenge.

Points do NOT cross over, the challenges are SEPARATE challenges.

As with the MYB challenge, it would be a good idea to post the total points to date at the end of your post.

This challenge will start January 1 and will end January 31.

Good luck and stay safe!

Challenge is live! You have the month of January to accrue as many BSP as you can. Happy New Year!

Good times. My gym, like most things, is closed today. So, pushups and situps and squats and stuff for me today. Not even running, because it's snowing like crazy.

359 reps, 101 medium and 258 light for 4.6. BSP's. and the added a core routine, 50 light reps: total for the day = 5.1 BSP's.

Kettlebell circuit with the 1.5 pood (~54#) and the 2 pood (~72#), with abs and pushups.

415 light reps for 4.15 BSP
126 medium reps for 2.52 BSP
60 heavy reps for 2.4 BSP

9.07 BSP to date

Light
100 Pushups (in sets of 20) for 1 BSP
25 Situps for .25 BSP
25 Burpees for .25 BSP

Heavy
5 Handstand Pushups (with someone spotting me so I don't break my neck) for .25 BSP

Total for day 1 + 1.75 BSP. Not too impressive, but it's a start and I've been slack so It'll take a few days to get back on the horse.

Gym being closed, I did just light stuff. 300 pushups in sets of 50, 400 abs in sets of 50. Combined 700 light reps for 7 BSP to date.

you guys need to step it up i bench 270 (UNASSISTED) and squat 300 daily, however i do play football so i do have to work out alot ...

This challenge is doing good things for me - just did my core routine which normally would be about 55-60 reps of crunches and stuff but just to make it come out for a BSP, I just did 100 reps. Motivation! 1 BSP for a cumulative total of 6.1.

Today is really supposed to a MYB day for me but 4" of new snow and -5 degrees F outside. Guess it will have to be treadmill and exercise bike, neither of which I like all that much.

We'll just give you the benefit of the doubt and point out that the purpose of this thread is SELF improvement, not competition. Nor, as far as I know, has anyone posted up how much weight they're lifting. If it were competition, I'd mention that one's body weight determines to a certain extent how much they can lift. I've got a few pals who were football players who can lift more than I can, but they can't lift the same percentage of their body weight (and when you say football, which sport do you mean? Canadian football as I recall isn't the same as what Americans mean when they say football, and that's different from what the rest of the world means).

Not to mention, those who have posted up so far have BSP on the board. From your post, you're still sitting at a 0. Perhaps YOU should step it up?

If you're not participating, why chime in and tell those who ARE trying to improve themselves that they need to step it up? If you're trying to make yourself feel better, congrats. I'm glad you are staying in shape for sports, and I hope you stay with it after you aren't playing sports. But consider, it's better to make oneself feel better by improving one's fitness, no matter where you're at. Why not participate, as long as you're going to comment? What's it going to hurt to keep yourself motivated, and go for the advanced goal?

Also, I was under the impression that there was such a thing as the Canadian Football League (and to the rest of the world, football means the sport that Americans call soccer, hence the distinction)?

So, during today's exercise, a question arose for me. If I do 10 reps with the curl bar, does that count as 10 reps or 5? And correspondingly, say I do 10 reps with each arm using a barbell. Are we counting that as 10 reps, or 5? That's going to hugely affect my workout total.

Counting them as 5, I did 100 medium reps of bench, 60 medium reps of curls with dumbbells (or 120 if the 10 I did for each arm count as full reps), 60 medium reps with the curl bar, 180 medium reps of shoulders, 224 light reps of dips, 426 light reps of abs. That brings me to 400 (or 460) medium reps for 8 (or 9.2) BSP, and 700 light reps for 7 BSP. Combined total of 15 (or 16.2) BSP for the day, bringing me to 22 (or 23.2) BSP to date.

Hmm, good question. Barbell 40 vs double 20s. I've been counting my arm reps as one rep left and one rep right = 1 rep total, but just for simple bicep/ tricep stuff. I'd say it's your call. You'll be hitting the 50 for sure, regardless.

Gotta say, this has gotten me mighty amped up. Makes me want to step it up! Going a little heavier today and do rep based rather than time to max out the reps. My 1.5 and 2 pood bells need more loving.

Instead of hitting the gym today I had to go to the doctor's office.. hoping to get a light workout in tomorrow.. freak crazy allergy season going on down here right now.

Grats to all the early starter, hoping to catch up quick..

its american football. their is no canadian version of football lol ...

Someone ought to tell that to Doug Flutie, Warren Moon and a few other notables (look 'em up). I think they might be shocked to hear that.

And...back on topic...very cool concept. Have to pass for now, but if my back will properly heal maybe I can get involved later. Neat idea. Fun and motivational. For now, I'll watch (read) and live vicariously through you guys. :)

Kettlebell circuit, using 1.5 or 2 pood depending on exercise. Threw in pushups and abs as well.

420 light reps for 4.2 points
228 medium reps for 4.56 points
72 heavy reps for 2.88 points

for 11.64 points.

20.71 BSP to date.
