Weird habits anybody.....

Fidget with them quite a bit. As a matter of fact if a knife is not a good fidgeter I will sell it. As for backups I am looking for 2 backups right now and won't carry the one I have till I get the backup.

I am a sucker for a great deal and have bought knives I dont really need just because they were super cheap.

Examples that come to mind are owning 5 almost identical Leatherman multitools (Rev, Wingman, Sidekick, etc.), 4 Case Trappers (identical except for scales) and too many Buck fixed blades.

All bought on clearance because the prices were too good to pass up.

I flip open my carry knife of the day, check the edge (which I know is already sharp), make sure everything is smooth and clean, before it goes in the pocket.
I do this before I put the knife away after a day of carry. Additionally, I'll check sharpness and sharpen if necessary and work a drop of oil into the pivot (for folding knives) and on the blade before it goes in the box of knives. I usually grab whatever knife I'm gonna carry right before I leave the house and I don't typically check them at that time (because I did that last time I put it away).

I think my habit stems from my other habit to check the magazine, slide, and carry condition of my EDC pistol before holstering every time.

I used to be more like that, but as I get older I've started carrying all my knives, regardless of beauty or cost. I love my Spyderco Vallotton SubHilt and carry it in my EDC rotation.

Maybe it's related to the stories I've heard about the people who were saving their (best silverware, best suit, best knife, best watch, best whatever) to use for special occasions or the 'right time' - and the only time it ever gets used is by a stranger, after it's purchased at a large discount at their estate sale. I decided I didn't want to 'save' mine, anymore.

I have this habit of getting really excited about a knife, researching it, price shopping for it, and then finally getting it... and never carrying it. I have a 4V Manix sitting in a dresser-top organizer that I 100% intended to make my primary EDC but my current hangup is that I’m worried about the non-stainless steel corroding even though I’ve already put a precautionary layer of marine tuff-glide on literally every metal surface.

I also have a Spyderco Vallotton that is always just a little too nice for me to feel comfortable carrying.

It’s a curse.

I tend to check my sharpness by filleting a thin piece of skin off one of my fingertips. If it can slice clean through, it’s sharp enough for me. I also drag the blade across my thumbnail to clean the edge after I cut certain items(cardboard/straps).

Almost forgot. Anytime I cut something, anything, I wipe each side of the blade on my pant leg before folding it and putting it away. If I cut something wet or messy I'll still use a towel first.

Same here, man. Whenever I find "the one" I end up having to get a duplicate safe queen no matter how expensive it was. I don't know why. I do it with lots of things but never in my life have I ever actually ended up needing the backup. Guess it just makes me feel more comfortable about carrying and using it without worrying so much about what could happen to it.

Hey eventually that knife will get discontinued and then who’s gunna he laughing?

I will sometimes take a Sharpie and draw a new profile on the blade to see if there is a shape in there that appeals to me more. I can almost hear the poor little thing saying, "Nooooo, I don't WANT to be a wharncliffe!" If it looks good, then it is off to the workshop.
Guilty...;)

Good points all.

I have a weird habit of wanting 2 or 3 backups of my favorite knives.

I have back=ups for the back=ups as well on a few of my favorites. As was stated in the thread - it seems weird until that knife gets discontinued.

It’s a curse.

Be it a curse, a sickness or just an addiction to a hobby - I'll get a case of the gotta-havitz buy the knife in question only to put in the save or storage where it only gets periodic fresh air and fondling.

Oh how i wish you hadn't gine there; I am guilty of that as well. My mother used to say that "It's not a bargain if you don't need it." I didn;t always listen to my mother.

Truer words have never been spoken. I live the bumper stickers on motorhomes that says "Spending the Children's' Inheritance" and the same can be applied to knives. The older I get - the more I'm carrying safe queens.

Cutting the number of flights/long distance travel since the post 9/11 TSA ban.
Letting facial hair grow so I can test the sharpness of my edc.
Gifting knives to visitors who haven’t brought their own.

This actually made me laugh.......I dont do that habitually but have done this before.

Haha. I'm that way with stickers. Can never find a spot "worthy" enough so now I have a bunch of stickers I like but am to afraid to stick them anywhere, lol

I’m developing an obsession about how sharp my blade edges are. It bugs me if I have a new knife that I want to carry but the edge isn’t sharp enough to easily slice through paper and shave arm hair.

Is it stickers this week? I thought last week you were collecting toothpicks...?
