CBS's Katie Couric, while interviewing a Marine sniper asked: "What do you feel when you shoot a terrorist?"
The Marine shrugged and replied: "Recoil."
Ya gotta love that answer!

I joined this board and started posting in 1998, and was subsequently banned in conjunction with the TAD debacle.
" A reporter asked a chopper gunner. How can you shoot women and children? He replied that you just give them a little less lead. Cheers
Is this anything like the great Maxpedition debacle of a couple years ago over on the USN?
Rick
Yes; in more ways than I care to name.
You gotta know that quote is an urban legend. It was originally ascribed to a Reuters reporter in a longer format and then to Katie in this shortened version. To me it seems to have sprung from the VietNam period from the following. " A reporter asked a chopper gunner. How can you shoot women and children? He replied that you just give them a little less lead. Whether or not that was actually said is anyone's guess but I doubt it. In my experience people just do not think that fast on their feet.
Anyway I am in NYC and have yet to meet another soul interested in Busse except at the custom knife show and they were not New Yorkers
Cheers
No way I'm stirring this pot.details on both please. not so much info to get you in trouble here, just curious.

No way I'm stirring this pot.Even when I'm in troublemaker mode. If I may make a friendly suggestion, take this down below PM style, or email if PM isn't available. I would be fascinated in the specifics, but in a public posting on these topics, the worst behavior has a gravitational pull not seen elsewhere.![]()

Just sayin' my $.02.![]()
Could be. If it wasn't said, it should have been. She's never let it on the air though (unless she could find some way to bash Bush with it).

this from 'full metal jacket"? or was the scene an homage to the actual quote/urban legend?
Michael Herr wrote one of the best books on VietNam called "Dispatches."
In it he quotes a gunner who says this. He definitely reported it as a real quote but who knows. At the moment I'm too lazy to find the book and the quote but I would if people are really interested.
The story is pretty believable, in the timing and response anyhow. I've been lucky enough to know more than a few from the different OPS of life, and overall, they are quick witted to say the least.
I am confused. To which story do you refer and what are " a few from the different OPS of life?" Operations? Military personnel?
Research reveals that the Couric story is false and the other might be real.
Any roads I guess you travel in more intellectually nimble circles than I. In all seriousness, you are correct if you were referring to soldiers. Many possess an admirable wit and linguistic agility that other professions seem to lack. Probably due to the nature of the work.
