(Welcome to) The Traditional Order of O1

I use my Bull Nose fairly often. Not for rough work, but for stuff like bags of mulch or bales of pine straw, cutting up boxes, or other light duty around the house/yard stuff. This thing goes through cardboard like butter!
The O1 gets real sharp, real easy, but holds it's edge at least as well as 1095 if not better. After use it strops right back to super sharp.
It would be cool if GEC offered this knife in other popular tool steels as well, like A2, D2 and if possible W2.

I forget I have this knife sometimes. Need to get it out for a workout. I believe this is my only O1 blade, an LTW JET. Not sure if these ever made it into regular production(?). I like the full flat grind, and his handles are second to none.

I've got three knives in O-1. The 71 Bull Nose from 2014 was gifted to me at the 2015 Rendezvous by Primble. He bought it on the front porch of Great Eastern Cutlery from the late Bob Andrews. There is a pretty good chance it will remain as is! :)

The production totals didn't list any of the 2014 releases with O1 steel. Do you know if they were all O1 in 2014 or was the red linen some kind of FSA?

Darren the red Linen was actually an SFO for knifeswapper knifeswapper Mike Latham at CK. The tube doesn’t actually say that it was an SFO but the database lists them. I assume they were all O1 but I’m not sure. Maybe Mike will see his name quoted and kindly give us some more info. :)

My understanding, which could be incorrect, is that the Farm and Field line was all O1 for its its toughness boost until at some point (2015-ish) Bill decided that the extra production hassle wasn't worth it for the gains over 1095. I've held a bunch of Bullnoses, and I don't recall any earlier knives in 1095. Also Hay'n Helpers.

Some knives, as Ron is pointing out, were CK exclusives, though they may not show up as SFOs, like the no-shield triple lined bolsters Northfield 33s in ebony from a similar year. Bill used to offer Mike the whole lot of a run that Mike didn't commission, so it wasn't an "SFO", but Mike was the only one who got that run or configuration of the run. Fewer GEC dealers and much lower volume back then. Some of these Bullnoses may have been done the same way.

I don't recall the circumstances on the 01 production - much like ALL other runs of mine. Guess I should have wrote something down.....

Seems like at one time I was told that GEC used 01 on the F&F series because it was so close to 1095 make-up but much cheaper at the time. Eventually the 01 price went well above 1095 and there was no longer an incentive to use it.

Here's my fixed blade with O1. Use it pretty regularly. Sharpens easily and holds a nice edge!
