Well, I passed the JS peformance test.

Nice job, Phillip. Never doubted for a sec that you would do great.

Check your e-mail for my response.

Wasn't any doubt in my mind that you'd pull it off... too cool, bro! Congrats!

That is impressive.

Congrats Phillip! If you dont mind whats the specs on the knife you used for the test?
Good luck in Atlanta. Not that luck has much to do with it. Are you going to show us what your taking before hand? I think you will do fine.

I used 5160 and treated it as follows.

I forged it from 1-1/8"ish round stock (it was a John Deere load shaft cut off that I got from Dan Gray a while back) . I thermal cycled it three times, using lowering heats, (1600, 1525, 1450) After annealing, I ground it right about to the finished thickness, coated it with antiscale compound, soaked it at 1525 for 20 minutes or so, then edge quenched using a limiter plate in Shell Voluta 201 quenching oil. I tempered it at 350 3 times. I actually made two blades at the same time, forged from the same bar, and tested one of them at home before going to Kevin's. The one I did at home was slightly thicker, and it still flexed/bent just fine, so I knew the other one would be good too.

Both these blades have really cool quench lines. There's two lines, and they intersect about 2" from the tip.

Like so:

To answer your other question, I will be showing the JS knives as I get them finished. I already posted one:

Congratulations! And that JS knife is a beauty too! Good for you.

When you had passed, did he say something like "Congratulations........now NEVER make another knife like this as long as you live"?:D

Well, the way he's going he may well need to make one more knife like this a few years down the road :D

Consgratulations, good job. Could I ask as to what type of heat source did you do your heat treating with.

I used an Evenheat oven. I coated the blade with antiscale compound, and soaked it at 1525 for 20 minutes or so.
