I have been to two knife shows in the past two weekends. The Orlando Art Knife Invitational and the Gator Cutlery Club Show here in Lakeland,FL.
I could not believe how many WELL known makers, purveyors and collectors have never heard of Talonite! Several well known bladesmiths that also supply other makers with damascus never heard of it either. One of them writes articles for the magazines!
More often than not, when I mentioned Talonite, I got an odd stare like I was from another planet!
Has anyone else experienced situations that make you think that being a BF member has made you more informed than most knife enthusiasts?? I am using the Talonite thing as an example. Wheather you like it or not for a blade material is not the point. It just seems that most of the BF members are well aware of its presents in the knife world.
Neil

EDIT: YES, I know, PRESENCE

There's no question that I know TONS more about knives than I did before joining BF, and I'm still a novice. That's one of the biggest reasons I enjoy this place; I can talk to guys who know an awful lot about knives (like you, Neil), and ask questions and not be made to feel like I don't belong, just because I don't own a forge. There are some online knife places where ignorance is not tolerated lightly. Here, it's often celebrated!

Seriously, though, what you say is true. BF is a huge educating force in the knife world.

I'm too informed, thanks to BF I can now spend every spare penny I can earn just from the talented makers here, not to mention the Dealers and members with knives to sell. Forget about Talonite, I'm still trying to get my first Custom Damascus piece. There is a point when knowing too much can be dangerous, this place is dangerous!

I'll take a "presents" of some Talonite.

Being here gives knife enthusiasts a big heads up over non-'net knife nuts.
Tons of info floating around on these Forums, just waiting to be used.
From what I learn here, I make a real pest of myself when talking to other knife nuts who don't have the benefit of these Forums. But, when they want info, they come to see me.

Hey Guys....

Geez,, Talonite!
We can break it down even further.. At least here in Canada, You say Kydex or Concealex,, you get that same blank stare...

Even from people who know knives pretty well,,they've Never heard of the stuff...

Folks!!

We are in our own little world here...
I have no idea how people exist in the knife world without a computer. I usually don't buy knife rags either,,only when there is someone I know in it...

Dr. I believe We are Absolutely the Best informed people on the planet!!!I agree with you 110%...

ttyle Eric...

informed??? i thought thats what you did to the drug dealers down the street when you call the cops on them....and dr lathe, just what is this talonite stuff...is it like krytonite only with a t?

No one ever knows anything until they're exposed, and what a place to get exposed!

Talonite is in my future....
(as well as cobalt...)

I know so much more about knives than i did before i discovered BladeForums. Man, its almost scary to think back to last august, which is when i found BF when i was doing a search on knives. Back then, i thought cold steel was as good as it gets. As an example: id never heard of chris reeve or a sebensa, and even if i had i wouldnt have had any of this knid of feedfack.

Ive learned 5, no 10 times more on BF than in any knife magazine. Man, do i love this place.

I'd argue that BF is THE LARGEST knife information database anywhere in the world. The members here are constantly contributing to the growth of this information stock pile. This place is great!

This is truly the new west. The internet is not brand-new but how we are starting to use it is brand-new teritory. It really is fantastic how we can all learn from each other. Things that took years to learn can now be learned in months. Things we didn't even know to ask we can learn. WOW

Dr Lathe, I agree with what you say about general knife knowledge.
There is a chance, though, that the old timers know talonite as stellite. Isnt it the same? I've heard that the name stellite was trademarked so others call it talonite.
Anyone know if this is true?

Contrary to popular belief most makers are not hermits, they just act like that.

We get into our shops and grind every hour that we can and contact with the outside world is limited. In fact some makers only come out when there is a show to attend and it is at these shows that they meet other makers and discuss the art of knifemaking. In fact the shows are critical to spreading new techniques and materials through the industry.

A few makers are now on line and begrudge every minute spent tapping on the keys because it takes them away from what they would like to be doing, making knives.

These forums are a lot like an ongoing knife show as far as the information transfer but they do consume a lot of time.

Gotta go now, knives to make, nose to grind.

People get very set in their own opinions about knives and seem to block out any new information. Of course, we never have that here, right?

I was having lunch with some friends and we were joined by a friend of theirs. Somehow the subject of knives came up. This guy pulled out a very small Voyager and asked me if I had ever heard of Cold Steel. I told him about the various CS knives I owned. I pulled one of four I was carrying and asked him if he had ever heard of SpeedTech. His answer was "No" and "Wow!"

I was at another friend's house and he was telling me about something weird he had seen on the Internet. We got on line, I called up BF, and clicked over to one of Vampire Gerbil's photos. Guess who won that contest?
wink.gif

The Internet is vast and not everyone is on-line. I tell several people about BF and not surprised when people, even in the knife industry, are UN-informed. Some people don't think they have any more to learn. Until they learn to "Click", I guess we will have to remain the best informed and most up to date. At the rate this forum is growing, it won't be long before a knife isn't considered a "knife" until it is mentioned on BladeForums. This forum has already made an impact in the present knife industry.

I visit BF every day and I learn something new. Keep up the good work.
