About two months ago, I started this thread about Utilikilts. Well, I've had mine now for long enough to give my opinion.

Fit: The fit was a miracle. From what I understand, it's really hard to fit one of these for yourself without trying them on, which I didn't have the ability to do. Luckily I found this really cool lady at a company called Chunk Rock Studios who was very helpful. With what she told me, I chose a size. It fit perfect. The way the fit worked out for me was 2" more than my pants size.

Comfort: Of course it's comfortable. It's non-stop air conditioning. The material that they use is a good strong material yet very comfortable and soft. The comfort and size of the material hasn't changed at all since I got it. Washing doesn't fade or shrink it. Even with the pockets full of junk, it still hangs very well. The main thing that I like is the airflow though. Especially in the summer, I have a tendancy to sweat and the moisture and fabric rubbs me the wrong way all the time with pants. With pants, some Goldbond powder is a good idea for long hikes. Not necessary with the Utilikilt.

Appearance: It's no secret that the thing is still a modern kilt. I don't feel comfortable wearing it everywhere. Mostly its for around the house, working around the shop on the weekends, events where it wouldn't be extremely uncommon, and hiking and camping with good friends, with the wife, or alone. In my opinion it looks good. That doesn't meen much though. In the early eighties, I thought I looked good in neon breakdancing attire, so my opinion of what looks good has to be closely monitered by the wife.

General opinion: I think it's a pretty cool piece of clothing, and in the right environment and conditions, is a very good alternative to regular pants or shorts. You do have to learn how to sit down differently, same as with a regular kilt, so that your bum doesn't get all dirty and you don't accidently dip yourself in anything, but you get used to it quick. The pockets are great. They hold a lot of junk. Urinating is fun. Just lift up and let 'er rip. Pooping, not so easy. I recomend anyone who has ever been curious about them to try one out. I love to go hiking and camping in mine and just lounging around the house in it. It is super duper comfortable. I decided to get another one of the "modern kilts" from another company. I wanted one in OD green and Utilikilt doesn't make one in that color. Amerikilt does though, so I'm going to give that one a try as well.

I've had two since last august...

one original, and one survival, and whole heartedly agree that they are great...

I tend to wear mine most places, but I have hte benefits of bein a college student slacker at the moment... you'd be surprised the compliments you et wearing them out on the town...

utilikilt, the only piece of clothing which got me hit on, almost in a fight, and offered free drugs, all in one night:D

I've got 2 UKs, one light one for bumming around the house, and 2 other I made that are good for regular wear.

I have gotten to the point where I just wear them most everywhere. Sometimes it takes Attitude, and sometimes it takes a bit of sarcasm. I've had mroe than one time where the response was aggressively loud enough I've had to respond with "Dude, I have balls and a penis that I don't want to strangle. Pants are for girls, why are YOU in drag?" Well, not had to, but it works for someone my size.

Usually it's fine. There's 2 main responses from males who respond- one is "cool, I need one!" and the other is "uh, why are you wearing a skirt".

Girls are funnier. There's 3 real responses from girls who respond. One isa yuppie shudder and a whispered comment to whoever they are with. Another is "are you Scottish?", and the third one is the best. They look at me, look at the kilt, do a double take and them stare at the kilt (crotch) for a few seconds and smile.

Around here, it's about 33/33/33 for obvious responses.

Practically speaking: i have the workan's model (2 of them). It's great. I hang my little hammer through the hammer loop, pop my favorite pliers on the other side in a tool pocket, have all my shop junk and my EDC sheath knife and just work away.

For hiking I do recommend LONG boxers, like the horizontal fly midlength ones. And longer socks. I go for top of calf if I'm going through much brush.

good to hear the glowing recomendation.

i really need to get me one...i was looking pretty seriously at one before but then my bicylcle broke and i had to take care of the vehicle before fashion...

but as soon as i can afford one, i am going to pick one up.

I'd wear one every day if I thought I could get out of my yard without getting into three fights. Rural SC frowns on things that are "different."

Yeah-- I'm not nearly big enough or tough enough to wear one around here. May as well wear a sign that say's "Who wants to beat me up?"

Huh, their commercials do a good job of making you want one. I'd love the freedom, in a similar way that my feet love the freedom of sandals.

I might have to give one a try!

I've been told "NO" A buddy and me jokingly commented on getting them, however those with veto power voted us down. funny thing is, if I wore that, I could openly carry a dagger, and claim it was my heritage, even if it's not...

Good to see the kilt is still going strong and getting to the type of areas it should be worn in.

I checked their website and then saw the prices, I may look into getting a spare kilt from a 2nd hand shop up the road it's about $75 for an ex-hire kilt. While it won't be my tartan and may be a little worn in that shouldn't be a problem for the woods.

Now here's my question, what about the mosquitoes and other flying biting pita? I get swarmed by them at the best of times never ming letting them have a straight shot at my family jewels.

As a side not if anyone wants me to pick up a kilt for them i'd be happy to. Just shoot me a pm to talk it through.

I've worn mine in more cosmopolitan areas and never gotten anything more than a strange look or three. I also wear it hiking/camping a lot.

Holy shnapps... you bring up a very good point... What about the familly jewels? I hear deepwood oFF leaves nasty rashes on genitals... hahah k don't mind me...:jerkit::foot:

wear UnderArmour boxers under neath the kilt. Very breezy, yet yer junk is protected form skeeters.

DylSide did you have any problems with rubbing between your legs on long hikes. I realy want one but the price holds me back. Here in LA besides that i might get in fights im more worried about the pick up lines i might get from the wrong people if you know what i mean lol... Did any one try to make a pair at home??? are there any plans(or what they call them to make dresses) for it??
RoyalM i think the shiping to the US would be a killer.

I've got two: a survivor and an original.

I lost a little weight and the survivor is too big for me now. I need to find some one who can alter it.

I wear 'em anywhere. Easily the most comfortable piece of clothing I own. I can't imagine not having a UK.

People look twice, but I haven't caught any crap for wearing one. I wouldn't give a damn if anyone did. Wear what ever you want. But if you are stuck in pants, I just feel sorry for you. ;)

as much as i advocate the form before function rule, i dont think i could ever bring myself to wear one, but congrats on finding somthing that works well for you.
