Well it's official , I am an Apple guy

My primary computer is a 27" iMac. I also use my iPad constantly.

I use Windows at work, and it's OK most of the time.

I also run about 5 Linux distributions on VMWare depending on what I'm doing.

Overall, I prefer the OSX/Mac for general computing.

For networking stuff, Windows/Linux.

All I can say is that everyone should do the research and find out what works the best for their needs.

I have been using Ubuntu Linux for over five years now and it has been the best computing experience so far.

I like being completely in control of my computer and data.

Being able to pick-and-choose the desktop environment is great too!

My wife really wanted a Mac for her new laptop but she got a Lenovo instead. Why? Because I paid $400 what hardware wise would have cost about $1100 in a Mac. I know the computers themselves are nice, but they Intel i processors like PC's and usually less memory. Plus, I hate all their proprietary crap, MP4 or whatever, when a PC can handle a half dozen music files, a iPod can only deal with their file type, and you can convert Mp3 to Apple, but you cannot convert back very easily. Little stuff like that bugs me, not to mention I am a Beatles fan, so their copyright infringement on Apple Records irritates me as well. I just do not get it, she loves the Lenovo, and is used to Windows. In the working world unless you are a graphic designer you will most likely be using a PC, so it is easier to stick with it and not learn two systems. Also, I just got my first Android phone, and a lot of people with iPhones I know are a little miffed that my phone can do what it can do.

I just got an iPad. First Apple product I ever owned. I got it for free from work its nice to use...in fact, I am using it to write this post now. Honestly, I would never buy one with my own money, but I will use the hell out of a free one. It's simple and pretty intuitive but I am a customization/tinkerer kind of person and with apple products, it's seems what you get is what you got. Not my style. For some, that is perfectly fine. I don't get the crowds standing in line to get these things one bit. It's functional and does what it is geared to do. Nothing more...nothing less. The cult followers they have is nutty IMO.

Actually I have to say that I am way more impressed by my iPad than my new iMac. I didn't put out any coins for either, if I had spent the 1700 for the mac, I probably would take it back and get a PC, just saying. I would not ever take back the iPad, it is a very cool device and quite honestly, I could pretty much run my business with it alone.

I've been using Ubuntu since Ubuntu 7.10 but when "Unity" came along I started looking for an alternative. I'm currently using Xubuntu 12.04 LTS with Xfce desktop and it's great. Complete control and very fast and light. I upgraded to Xfce 4.10 and switched from Thunar file browser back to Nautilus which I prefer. When Xubuntu 12.10 was released I tried it but there are a few annoying bugs that don't seem to be getting fixed.

NorCalMtn2: I agree with you 100 percent.

I too have switched from the main version of Ubuntu to Xubuntu.

I tried to like the Unity and Gnome 3 desktops, even KDE 4, but I like to keep the desktop as simple as possible. Xfce is getting the job done for now though. I did try Cinnamon from Linux Mint and liked it quite a bit.

I am running Xubuntu 12.10 on my desktop and Xubuntu 12.04.1 on my laptop. I shouldn't have bothered upgrading the desktop though.

To me, the best thing Xubuntu 12.10 offers is Xfce 4.10 and you can get that through a PPA. I also like running long term support releases for their greater stability. You probably already have this but here are the terminal entries for upgrading Xubuntu 12.04 from Xfce 4.8 to 4.10:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:xubuntu-dev/xfce-4.10
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

I don't know how you feel about Thunar file manager but Nautilus works well with Xfce 4.10 and doesn't seem to slow anything down. If you set Nautilus as your default file manager it handles any folders you manually open and Thunar still handles the desktop and folders the system automatically opens.

I've tried most of the Mint offerings and found my favorite to be Linux Mint Debian Xfce edition. I tried Mate and Cinnamon, they were nice but seemed too GUI oriented.

Do you use Remastersys? It sure makes distro hopping easier to be able to reload your fully configured favorite distro in about 6 minutes. I know you can just run a VM but they don't behave the same as an installation.

Part of the reason I switched from Ubuntu to Xubuntu is to get away from the PPAs.

I was just running so many, it was too much to keep up with.

I have done web searches to find everything I needed to modify Xubuntu. Plus, I went to Xfce.org and read through some of the documentation.

One of the other reasons I switched was for a while at least (it may have been changed by now). Once Unity came along, Ubuntu wasn't allowing me to have more than one file manager open at once. Which made moving files around a much slower process that it should have to be.

Plus, the desktop switching involves extra clicks or keys too.

As for trying new or other distros, I have always used CDs before and now flash drives. Never really had a reason to use Virtualbox or anything like that.

I am liking Xubuntu a lot so far. It is polished enough, but stays out of the way when I need it to. I have it set-up very close to the old Gnome 2 desktop. But it feels a bit lighter and quicker.

I think I am done distro-hopping for now. I will try the release candidate for Linux Mint 14 soon, just to see if it will run on my desktop.

But I think I will be sticking with Xubuntu for quite a while.
