Well, some good news

Ryan, congrats for the new job.
As for knives, I'm waiting for my Buck 303 to get into my hands (it's already in friendly hands in FL, and soon it will be here) but hey, now you got the job, finding a good knife for it will be the easiest part :D

Glad to hear of your good fortune! Have fun with the new job and all that knife testing.

I found that sliding the edge under the strap and cutting as one would open up a deer or other animal (blade up) was the easiest way to open straps when I worked in an oilfield warehouse. A lot of the time the tension on the strap was enough to cut it as I turned the knife over and gave a minor tilt to the blade.

Now we need feedback as to what works best for you- good to be back at work, I spent 3 years off after breaking my legs and going back to school, it was a great feeling being productive again!!

Conratz to your new job!!

I hope you enjoy the new job ... and... BTW: I hope you have a lot of fun using your knives the whole day... :)

Kind regards
Andi

well today wasnt quite as knife intensive as yesterday, but they did see plenty of use
nothing as hard though. Still using the one handed opener, so convenient to open with one hand and cut..

but i will try and change things up some when i get comfortable ...i kinda wanna try the sodbuster out, think that would be a good choice for this kinda work (I THINK :p)

oh and thanks everyone for the congratulations! :D

A large soddie will work great in a warehouse type setting. I used to keep mine in the back pocket on the left side and could get it out and get the job done as efficiently as if it were a one-hander.

well i have the soddie jr in CV
but it should still be able to be pinched open even with gloves
so it should work ok

Congrats on the job. Just get a folding utility knife that you like. Sears maybe. Get a box of the Stanley extra heavy duty blades and you will be good to go.

The kind of work your doing, I have done it, the utility knife with the extra heavy duty blades will excel. You may have to mod your knife a little to fit the blades.

Another piece of good news. Always good to hear someone get a chance to get back into the flow after some bad luck. Hope you enjoy the job and excel at it bud.

Will

i appreciate the suggestion
its a wonder, are you implying that modern folders cant take hard use in a real work environment?

not attacking, just wondering if thats been your experience
i am excited to try out a new Old Timer that is being sent to me...bet it can take it :p

No, that's not what I was implying. The razor knives with the good blades just get the job done and your really not out anything at the end of the day. A lot of times the kind of work I used them for I would not use a good folder for. Sometimes the razor knives are easier and safer to work with too.

I only carried one when I worked in the field and encountered all kinds of seriously tough stuff. Plus I was working 72 hours a week and working on my "off" time so not worrying about finding time to sharpen was nice.

It just worked better for me. If you HAVE to trash a razor its not a big deal.

yeah i have thought about this
but where is the fun in this?

besides its not THAT hard on them i dont think
and i am honestly curious to see which knives hold up to real use and which ones ...dont

i am considering this..field work :D

Congrats on the job!
For zip ties and plastic straps a pair of good snips will save abuse on the knives, and be safer for you.
Have fun :D

I tried all manner of knives for my job as an electrician. I do a lot of zip tie cutting, cardboard cutting, box opening, tape opening. I spent hundreds and hundreds going after all manner of hawkbill, wharncliffe...... Steels..... Anyways, I hate to say it but I am using a Razor knife mostly. The super thin blade just works. I had a lot of fun learning what works for me though! :D

Congrats! Keep us updated on how all of your knives perform, I'll be following this thread :)

ok, well so far i have been using the Wenger SI and the Kabar dozier folding hunter
i tend to use the kabar more because its one handed opening, but i have noticed that the Wenger cuts MUCH nicer (thinner blade i suppose, and sharper for it)

i think i'll try my case sodbuster jr in CV tomorrow instead of the kabar and we will see how it goes

we do have one guy that has an old american old timer stockman he uses alot (i cant tell if its carbon steel or stainless, no patina but he says he has had it for like 20 years so i THINK its carbon steel) it seems to do the job just fine...

My experience when working in a warehouse was similar to what Kevin and Shane describe. Not as appealing to those who enjoy good knives, but a razor knife made quick work of thick cardboard and plastic (and I wouldn't cuss myself if I lost it).

well the case sodbuster jr in CV did the job today admirably
there were are few times when i had to make an incredibly awkward cut which a knife with a lock would have made me feel a little safer
but it managed, and its sharp enough that it cut through stuff much easier and quicker than my one handed folder

i even got a couple guys who enjoyed the knife and told me stories about their or friends of theirs who had case knives
so it was a good knife day

well i have my first day off after working 5 straight
i know that sounds normal, but 5 days standing and walking on concrete is KILLING me and my feet :p

we get Sundays' off and a floating day during the week (i started tuesday so they considered monday to be my day off lol)
it has been a humbling experience after working 5 years as a manager I have gotten SOFT, this work is physically demanding, hard on the feet and the back
and i probably sound like I am whining a little (i might be even :D)

Whenever i start getting down I am telling myself this is what our grandfathers did, this is how they worked and they did it day after day for decades, I just have to toughen up to get to that point. I am feeling the urge to start reading Steinbeck and Salinger again hehe. But I figure another couple weeks and my body will have adjusted to the work and it wont be nearly as bad.

Anyways, on to knife work. Been carrying the Soddie Jr the last couple days. I really like how it works, it occasionally generates a comment or conversation with a customer, its sharp as all get out and cuts everything i need well and has not developed any play. I think this is why folks go on and on about the sodbuster (its one thing to know it, and another to SEE it). It just works, not fancy or elegant, but tough and does the job

ironically its got a pretty good patina on it and i am getting rust anyways, presumably from my sweaty fingers. Probably gonna have to do more than just wipe it down with my bandana at the end of the day (what you think i was going to work at a job like this without a bandana in my pocket??) hehe

But I just wanted to thank everyone for the encouragement and congratulations on finding the job.
I hope ya'll have a great Sunday
