Well.....well.....well.....

Gonna post pics/vids?

Bruise's 15" AK has an interesting mark on it. I'll put up a picture later. It's almost as if a super-kami pinched it too hard - right at the bend.

It wasn't evident when I first got the khuk from Bill, but as soon as I put it to the grinder, the indent showed up real fast. It's not a defect, though, so I didn't get obsessed with try to even it out.

With Bruise's new satiny-smooth hand-rubbed finish, it doesn't look bad at all - looks kind groovy...well, at least "wavy". :D

I'm sorta lookin' at cameras as a camera will open up new avenues for posting stuff here. :)

I could run out and get a 2 mega pix cam without too much difficulty but everyone says get a 3. For a 3 I will have to sell a few more popsicle stick knives.

Is there that much difference in pic quality even though I will have to shrink the pics to post online?

There is a significant difference in quality of the CCD (image recording device) of a 2 MP and 3+ MP camera.

While it's true that for internet purposes, you don't really need more than 1 MP, if you plan on ever making prints, you'll want a 3 MP.

I use my 6 MP at the 1 MP setting to shoot stuff for the internet. It seems like a waste, except that the pictures are being taken by a much highly quality camera in the first place. By the time they make it to the internet, they are much better.

That said, there is also a jump in cost between a 2 MP and a 3+ MP camera.

If the only thing I wanted was to post images to the internet, I'd get a 2 MP and shoot at 1 MP and use the money I saved for more khuks!

Also, a video:

Showing the blade in it's freshly ground state - before polishing.

How do you determine how far up the edge the bevel begins at?

Somehow the blade looks bigger than 15" in the vid.

If you mean "how do I determine how wide to make the bevel" - the answer is: I let the khuk decide. I just hold it at a consistent angle relative to the spine, and the bevel goes where it wants to. If you've seen my grinding videos you'll see what I mean. I hold it vertical so that the spine is within 1/16" of the belt. The bevel actually gets taller with less pressure. More pressure against the belt grinds more at the edge. It's all quite fascinating.

Wait until you get it. Then it will feel lighter than air too...

:D :D :D

When I view the video, I get sound but no picture (Windows Media Player). Anyone else having a problem?

I got sound - even heard Pen's kids in the background !!

probably chasing something with that knife his Pa made him !!

:D

Bruise;
I used to sell cameras (including digital ones) for a living, or a so called living.
Right now, I wouldn't recomend a digital camera with less than 3MB resolution because a lower resolution camera will be made as cheeply as possible. One of the things you'll lose is an ability to take very close pictures. If you wanted a picture of an 18" AK for instance, an overall shot would be fine but a close up of a dent in the blade would be fuzzy. Look at the post by Vess (sorry Vess), the OA shots are fine but the close ups aren't. They're not bad but they could be better.

As for brands, I don't like the control layout on Sonys but the pictures are fine. Any other brand is fine.

2 down...

clearblue - you're not going to believe what I did with your khuk.

Here's a sampler:

http://www.pendentive.biz/blades/clearblue1.wmv

I now see why Uncle charged only $35 for it. As you saw when you opened it up (before sending it to me) there are many blemishes, dents, ding, irregularities. I did the best I could do without completely redoing the kami's work. I left a few blemishes in there - so you would never forget what it used to be like. Everything else is up to spec. Polished bolster, hand-rubbed satin finish on blade, oil/polyurethane protection on the handles, and the karda - full convex grind.

I'll send yours and Bruise's on Monday.

Enjoy!!!

As Sam Kinison, the comedian(God rest his soul)use to scream--OH!OH!OH!

I not sure which I'm more jealous of, your tutorials, or your blade work. Both are something to witness.

Thanks and a lick on the nose from Annie,my little Yorkie.
Clearblue

Bruise - your AK and a CD are on its way today.

Clearblue - the finish on your khuk handle was kickin' my butt yesterday, but I got it under control. The CD shouldn't take long, and then I'll send it off.

The difference is - the videos on the CDs are higher quality with better sound.

Enjoy, Bruise!

Just let me know when it arrives, and if you don't mind, a little feedback would be helpful.

I'll do a full review and compare it to one o' mine. I think mine will match or outperform the one you sharpened on the "crush stuff with spine" test. :)
