Was wondering if anyone wears a western "cowboy" hat when in the woods...I'm looking for a rugged reccomendation any links or pics are helpful thanks.

Living out west I've worn a cowboy hat or two. During summer I like straw but, stupid as they look, I've come to prefer a Tilley hat. Much nicer in HOT weather. Cold weather, it's a pile beanie of some type. I like the Seirus stuff.

Seeing as how I'm born and raised in Texas, I would say go to Cavenders and look for a nice looking hat. I've never worn one in the bush, but I'm sure if I was born on a horse I would :D. I'm more of a baseball cap kind of person, so since my football team is the Dallas Cowboys, I guess I always wear a "cowboy" hat ;).

I like Bailey for fishing here in the west, both felt and straw by the season. They are traditional and durable. The fit is both size and depth: I have one so shallow I look like Stan Laurel:D.

Full brimmed hats get in the way of a rain hood and blow off when on the ATV, so it's a ball cap for me about half the time. Make sure the brim is narrow enough that you don't have to lean forward to clear the headrest when driving. Having to take it off in the truck is a nuisance.:) ss.

Sunbodyhats crushable Guatamalan straw :)

All the shade you could want.

In the cooler weather a Resistol wool felt crusher...it is sort of a cross between a Fedora and Western.

When it gets real cold the rabbit fur 'Mad Bomber' hat comes out...only in the mid teens and lower.

I prefer my wool fedora, but have come to like the Tilley and winter's cold finds me wearing a watchcap.

I have a Bailey 7X felt hat that's a copy of one from the 1890's. It's seen much use! In fact, it got it's present shape by being out in an ice storm one night (while on my head!). Great hat, tough, and keeps the sun off my head.

The thing I like about Tilley is the loose fit and strap set-up. It gets breezy around here and when it's hot, tight hats are not comfortable. Like I said, they don't get too many style points but they are awfully practical.

I've got a cheap wool cowboy-style hat from Cabelas (Outback trading co, if that means anything to anybody) that has served me well for a few trips. It's comfortable, reasonably durable, but not all that good-looking. It also stinks to high heaven when it gets wet.

Last fall I picked up a nice Stetson white straw cowboy hat. It fits well, but tends to blow off in the wind. It makes for a very nice fishing hat, though. The wide brim keeps the sun off my head well. It should hold up pretty well, too. Several people I know where the Stetson straw hats and they seem to have survived the abuse they put them through.

I wear a cheap tilley style hat in the summer, and a toque in the winter. Nothing special.
