Western style hat

I have a Tilley Wool fedora winter hat. makes me look old. Keeps me warm. In summer i wear a shemagh or my standard tilley hat.

I like Stetson. This one has a 3.5" brim. Works great with a hat cover to keep the rain off my head. I don't like mine wider than 3.75" for fishing, etc... Wider brims get in the way. A 3.5-3.75" brim will keep the sun and rain off very nicely.

I just retired my 20+ year old OD bushhat and bought a replacement. They are made locally from canvas truck tarps. This style hat is a favorite here in central Brazil cattle country, or "localflage" as a friend put it. I figure if the cowpunchers use them they will probably hold up in the bush. I like that it protects the tops of my ears better. Mac

The cool thing about the Akubra's is that they come in many, many styles. You can get a hat the is made like a cowboy hat (from fur felt) and yet get about any look that you want.

I have the Banjo Paterson.

I can't give a direct link, but here is the Akubra website: http://www.akubra.com/

There are cheaper places to get them than David Morgan, even with the oversees shipping.

I've got an old Koolah oilskin hat I've worn since 1991 or so...kind of a cross between a Filson Tin Cloth bush hat and a boonie hat. The brim has snaps on both sides to get it out of the way and is only about 2" wide. It doesn't hit the top of my pack (or a headrest as straitshot mentioned) but is long enough to keep the rain from finding the back of my collar.

AFAIK, they aren't made anymore. On the sad day that it needs to be replaced, I like the Filson as well.

My wife bought me this Stetson Roadrunner in 78 or 79 & it is still going strong.
The sweat band has been replaced but that's it.

I'm almost as big a sucker for hats as I am kniven :D

it used to be really popular in the 50's.... it's really hard now to find a big open space to do it...

this one is 9 holes and is on private property, in petaluma ca... it is an added bonus to a weekend long 3-d archery shoot we do every year....:D

I was just about born in a "cowboy hat" but I prefer to wear a boonie hat. The only reason is that a stiff cowboy hat tends to catch more air on windy days and is more likely to blow off (even a well fitting one) in my experience. Because a boonie hat is not so stiff, it tends to give in the wind and stay on better. For cold weather I like either a fleece cap or balaclava.

Are Crushables really crushable. Like stuff in a bag and pops back or jam in a back pocket and still holds shape? I have a couple but have always treated them delicate and have not gotten used to me in them. I'm more of a boonie hat floppy style.
