Westerns

Tarantino has his enthusiasm turned up to 8...at least (see what I did there, Hateful 8...) but yep, I've not see the Django unchained, did watch the Hateful 8 and that was just out there. BUT one of his movies I do like, well more like just one scene, is where Brad Pitt gives his speech looking for 8 Jewish American soldiers...

"Dirty Binch"? Do you mean the "Wild Bunch"?

The "Dirty Dozen" with Denzel Washington? Do you mean the remake of "The Magnificent 7" w/Denzel in it? It was Jim Brown (the only Black actor in the film, who previously was a HOF running back for the Browns) who was in the "Dirty Dozen."

LOL!!!

The Wild Bunch and the original versions of The Magnificent 7 and 3:10 to Yuma were GREAT movies (not just westerns).

The remake of "The Magnificent 7" and "3:10 to Yuma" were just ok IMO, as was "Django Unchained." Didn't think much of the "Hateful 8," nor did the critics. I've seen almost all of Tarantino's films (and have many of them on DVD, but frankly I'm not a (big) fan.
Lol! Holy smokes (for lack of using more colorful language). Well deserved lambast, sgt1372 sgt1372 . In my defense, imbibement may have been involved, but sheesh nonetheless. Now off to watch Blazing Spaceballs. Carry on.

Netflix recently added "The Long Riders"
4 sets of actual brothers playing 4 sets of brothers. Keach & Carradine brothers playing the Younger's and James'.
Music by Ry Cooder.
One of the best modern Westerns made.

Have Gun Will Travel is on a couple networks. MeTV being one of them....

The one I want to see come back is Chuck Conners' "Branded"
I was a big fan of "Branded" as a kid. I think the nostalgia TV networks don't run it because it was only on for two years, so they'd run out of episodes quick (in contrast to something like "The Riflleman" which aired for several years). Of course the WORST part of "Branded" is in the intro scene when his commanding officer snaps his sword like it's a twig. What the hell kind of steel was that??????? Kind of hard for a knife knut to watch. "What do you do when you're branded? Can you live with a lie?"

I liked a couple of Tarantino's movies. "Pulp Fiction" and "Kill Bill." "Inglourious Basterds" is just so ridiculous that parts of it are amusing. IMO, Tarantino is an absolute MASTER of writing interesting dialog that is memorable and causes one to think. His plots and his direction do not match his gift for dialog, IMO. The Mexican Standoff ending of "Reservoir Dogs" is all-time embarrassing. No one - including Tarantino himself - can explain who shot Nice Guy Eddie.

As for the "Magnificent Seven," if you haven't seen the Original Original, "Seven Samurai" by the great Akira Kurosawa, and if you can handle subtitles (or speak Japanese), give it a watch sometime. I have it and a few other Kurosawa masterpieces (e.g., "Ran," "Rashomon") on Blu Ray. Good stuff!

IDK, people in the film bus apparently think that Tarantino is a genius but he's too over the top for me.

I have most of his films on DVD but, the only one (among all of those that he wrote and directed) that I really liked was "Pulp Fiction."

I am a BIG fan of the Mifune/Kurosaw films too and have many of them on DVD, including:

Hidden Fortress (1958)
Kagemusha (1980)
Ran (1985)
Red Beard (1965)
Roshomon (1950)
Sanjuro (1962)
Seven Samurai (1954)
Stray Dog (1949)
Throne of Blood (1957)
Yojimbo (1961)

All are classics and many of them (not just the 7Sam) were used at least as a plot basis for other US westerms.

2 US made films that Mifune "starred" in that are also worth mention are:

Hell in the Pacific (w/Lee Marvin) -- a WWII war movie -- and
Red Sun (w/Charles Bronson) -- a western.

And if you're looking for a recent Japanese themed US made movie, consider 47 Ronin (starring Kenau Reeves). Reeves also directed and starred in a Chinese martial arts film called "Man of Tai Chi" that got "mixed" reviews. FYI, Reeves is basically a 'mutt" but is at least 1/4 Chinese in ancestry.

IMO "47 Ronin" is the better of the 2. I liked it but (fair warning) many others (including the critics) did not.

PS: If anyone else has watched "Outer Range" that just started airing on Amazon Prime on 4/15, please let me know what it's about.

I've watched the 1st 2 episodes and I still don't "get it."

The show is set on a big ranch owned by a guy played by Josh Brolin who has discovered a big mysterious hole in the ground. Brolin (and those who surround him) seem to have a lot of unresolved "issues" and seem intent on keeping certain things secret while encountering unexplained events.

Where the hole came from & why it's there? What those issues and secrets are? What's the cause/meaning of those events? I have no clue yet.

There are supposed to be 6 more episodes airing over the next 3 weeks (total of 8 for the season) and I don't think I'll wait to give it another look until all the episodes have aired so that I can see if I can figure those things out.

The review of the show on RogerEbert.com is the most favorable and optimistic review I've read but is based on a viewing of all 8 episodes. So, I think I'm going to wait until all of the episodes to air and binge watch the entire season to see if it makes more sense to me as a whole.

I love all good and great westerns - older the better :^)

But big mystery for me is
how McQueen managed to load his 44-40 with hansome 45-70 ?
:^D

Outer Range, seems simple enough, like a western version of LOST and that didn't end well they got all 'lost' in the writing and seemed to just give up and ended it. I think I'll save my sanity and not continue with this Outer Range, rather sharpen something ;)

Almost old enough
:)

Gary may be old enough to remember this song, some others probably not.

Old enough Heard it before but it's a distant memory.

The song came out in 58 when I was 8. All of the music I heard then was played by my sister who is 9 yrs older than me. She mainly liked popular and folk music at the time -- Johnny Mathis, The Four Seasons & Jimmie Rodgers come to mind -- I still have the albums. She played some (but not alot) of R&R/R&B from that period.

I heard this and othe late 50's music when I got into "music" on my own starting in 1960 listening to it on a transistor radio, which included a lot of 1950's cross over R&B artists to begin with and then Motown, the Beatles and other English groups and the Beach Boys and "surfer" music which all emerged at about the same time.

I like them all but my "group" was mainly into Motown.

I liked "Lost" better the first time around when it was called "Twin Peaks."

NBC JUST tried this same bit with a show called "La Brea" - also about a mysterious hole in the ground. Nope. These shows tease a LOT of things but deliver very few answers to their mysteries. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.

Yeah, I watched but gave up on "La Brea" after 3 episodes.
Also just watched the 3rd episode of "Outer Range" and I've decided to give up on it too.

You hope that these shows will "deliver" but they seldom do. Oh well . . . 🤷‍♂️

I enjoyed the movie Old Henry (2021).
Predictable, but good for a small independent film.
Not to sidetrack, but I like Samurai films also...Much like westerns in many ways.
I lost track at 350 dvd's.
My Wife is from Sanada Clan.

I liked it, I was kinda mad when I watched the first two and realized that was it for now. I'm pretty sure the big hole is some kind of dimensional transporter with weird abilities. I think that hippie girl knows a lot more than she's saying too.

And science fiction:

Outer Range shaped up considerably. Nice twist in the end of Ep7, that perked me right up. Then in the beginning of Ep8 when the sheriff saw that, I was like "oh it's just getting good" lol, kinda a slow burn, took em long enough but now it's getting close to the payoff

I made the mistake of watching "Power of the Dog". If anyone can tell me where I can go to get those two hours of my life back I'd really appreciate it.

I guess it's my own fault. After all, it's a Jane Campion "western". I'm just a sucker for anything called a "western". At least I didn't pay to see it (free online).

On a happier note, I discovered Tubi awhile back (I'm currently watching The Rockford Files on it). Tubi is great.

I discovered a western series starring Pierce Brosnan called "The Son", but I haven't started it yet.

A few of my favorite western movies- Hombre. Lawman.

Favorite western tv series- The Big Valley.

Free online, where?
