I'm thinking of getting a wetterlings axe. What are your thoughts on these & where is the best place to purchase one ? I have the Gerber/Fiskars 14" sportaxe & I like it but am looking for a more traditional look.
Thanks

I'd say they are almost as good as GB, just at half the price, the only thing is, that you usually have to sharpen 'em a bit.
next to Gerber/Fiskars I'd say they are the moras of axes.

I have two of them and they are outstanding! Alot of axe/hatchet for the money. I highly recomend them.

Have you compared the Wetterling to the Snow and Neally? I have been eyeing them and I think I need to add one to my collection. What is the medium you will most likely be using them in Softwoods or Hardwoods? I think the Snow and Neally edge out the Wetterlings in Hardwoods based on edge geometry. They both would benefit from a little reworking. Pricepoint is about the same to the best of my knowledge.

Good luck on which ever you buy. I bought my Wetterlings at Ragweed forge (I don't believe he has any in sotck, I would check) My second Large hunter I bought from Wiseman Trading.

Hope this helps,

Paul

I think they are ok but I don't like the design for chopping as well as GB or Marbles.

I'd like to get one of the little Wetterlings 10" models but they are scarce.:(

I think when it comes to wetterlings or Norlund, its a personally preference, they are pretty equal effeciently wise.
Either way, they are both great axes, I prefer the blade style of the wetterlings over a GB or norlund and I was very happy with mine, definetly rocommend it.
Mine has a polish head and some work done to it mind you, but its not that different from stock.

Hollowdweller,

I am not sure if this is the one your looking for , but if it is. They have them at Wiseman trading.

The Wetterling Wildlife Axe measures 12 1/2" overall, with a 5 1/4" axe head, and a 2 3/4" cutting edge. It weighs 1.25 pounds, and comes with a leather blade cover which has a belt loop. The axe handle comes with a lanyard hole.

I am sorry to hijack your thread, Just trying to help out a fellow forum member.

Can't speak to Wetterlings, but I've been VERY happy with my Snow & Neally. Now... a Snow & Neally with Brain Andrew's treatment, and watch out Gransfor Bruks!

HD there have been a few of those 10 inch Wetterlings on ebay lately.
With the two i watched one went for around $75, the other for over a $100.
Unfortunately i can't remember the seller and i already deleted the listings from my watch list.

I have a Hultafors Brux 13" and a Wetterlings 14". Both are very nice, but I like the edge angle on my Wetterlings better... and it gets sharper too :D

I have been looking at these at my favorite local outdoors store - they have the full line. My favorite is the 24" model.

Back to the subject... a Wetterlings would be a great hatchet or axe. I have a Wildlife hatchet an it works for me. they may not show up as polished as a GB, but right now they can be found for maybe $100 less. I haven't gotten mine "shaving sharp" yet, but I bumped the thing last week and have a nice little 1/2 inch cut on my finger :D and all I used was a little sandpaper folded over a mouse pad glued on a board, also maybe a very small amount of file work. Pat

I have four Wetterlings of various sizes and am very satisfied. I reprofile the edge and then buff it up on a paper wheel with some polish. I sand the varnish finish off down to the wood and then used some linseed oil to treat them. Honestly I can use my Wetterling for many knife tasks only easier.

In fact, I'm getting ready to order another 16H Small Hunting Ax for my tent to use as a "kindling" ax. The last couple I've ordered I got from www.ofagear.com.

I gotta say, I can't imagine a better bargain than the Brian Andrews modified axe. It really does do 'that well' at its task. Came with a great edge, great geometry. Good weight up front. Feels like a big axe in a little axes body. I can't imagine much else that can compete with that price.

my wetterlings came with a decent edge, i pretty much just sharpened it up and oiled the handle and was out chopping. in terms of counting strokes to get through a piece of wood, comparing the same sized GB and wetterlings, they perform the same. the GB feels very different though, which is the main difference. the GB is also much more even and prettier.

the snow and nealy axes at my local hardware store look pretty good except for the edge bevels, which look like they are ground on a bench grinder. these need some amount of work to cut. the handles also tend to have oversized knobs at the end, but some people might like that. i think i will probably get one at some point.
