Wharncliff as EDC

I pretty much edc/collect large "tactical" style forlders but recently realised I need something more praticle/sheeple freindly for use in public. Something that doesn't make babies cry. So this little Loveless slipjoint with the wharncliff blade caught my eye the other week. Love this thing! The blade design is perfect for all my little cutting chores. Gonna keep my eye out for other wharncliff style blades now.

Here's a quick pick of the Loveless "City Knife" with watch I was wearing.

I think the blade shape of the Ritter RSK Grips are a good compromise ...

Of course, they are heavily influenced by the Sebenza blade shape (Doug Ritter himself says as much) ... There was a Ritter Sebenza, and then he developed the RSK Grips to bring the blade shape to more people at a lower price ...

That said, if you look at the blade, it's 3/4 wharncliffe, and 1/4 drop point.

The drop point just happens to be at the "sweet spot" on the blade for slicing ...

And there is enough tip to detail work ...

All in all a nice package, IMHO.

I agree with Planterz, and Physics, a modified mostly-wharnie blade is great. The LCC is my favorite knife for the last 5 years, and it is perfect for slicing and dicing, as the blade drops down slightly past the handle and bolster. It has enough curve to allow a rocking cut on larger items. I also own an A. G. Russell folder with what A. G. calls a "utility" blade shape, i.e. modified wharncliff. That one I've owned for almost 10 years, and it is still one of my favorites.

When I was designing my first custom made folder, to be used as an EDC.
The Wharncliff was the blade shape I decided on. I have never been sorry with the choice.
This knife was designed by me and executed by Art Washburn.

The Spyderco/Kiwi has what I would call a modified wharnie and makes an excellent EDC knife for work.

PhIL-I've been admiring that particular knife on your website for sometime now. That is absolutely the best looking folder I've ever seen. Kudos on the great design. (btw-I'm also a certified stagaholic. Stag has been my favorite handle material since I was a kid.)

I'd like to chime in with my admiration for the Wharncliff. I've got a ringed Razel on order from the Graham Brothers. After I take delivery on that one, I'm going to put down my name for an EDC Wharncliff. I'm thinking satin-finished 1/8" CPM 154 with mosaic pins, and blue twill G10 slabs, perhaps with double liners to somewhat compensate for thin blade. I won't get it until next September/October, but I can hardly wait.

My Trident TC-01 gets a lot of hard use. I like the blade geometry and find it rather useful.

I think you mean the tiger stripe style finish on the blade, and yes it came that way. One of Macjik's friends works at Citidel Gun and Safe here in Vegas, and is the only retailer in town. So, he ends up with all kinds of crazy Trident stuff for sale. Mostly variations on whats available on the website; bigger, smaller, diff blade geometry, etc...

I just ordered a Cento 4. I was thinking I might need to catch the order and switch it out for a more traditional folder with more belly until I realized virtually all of my knives are of this design. I think I prefer some belly for the cutting I do, but now I am intrigued and want to try out the Wharncliff. Most of my cutting is opening boxes or cutting the occasional piece of string which I guess is why I prefer knives with more belly.

I cannot find this model

You're out of luck, there was only a few hundred made for a market test and I believe the were all sold. It was also a Newgraham.com exclusive, I think.

I'm considering getting my first wharncliffes or modified-wharncliffe folder. I'm into smaller knives these days and I'm considering both the Nemesis Imp and the
Benchmade #332 produced for A.G. Russell.

Anyone have any experience with either model? I realize that the Imp is a rather small knife but on paper it looks to be the same size as a Kershaw Chive. How close in size is it to a Chive?

That's sweet. I can't seem to find anything like it on the net. Any links?

Hi easyrider,
I own a Benchmade #332 produced for A.G. Russell since 2002 and it is one of my small EDCs. I am very satisfied with the modified wharncliffe-style of the blade which is a good sytle for whittling and it is even not to small for whittling. Normally I wear it with the clip in my shirt-pocket - very light.

Thank you for the input. :D

I love a wharncliffe or sheepsfoot blade for EDC. I find that they are much more efficient for the things that I cut every day (boxes, tape, cardboard, cables, twist ties, etc). I have a Centofante IV and a Queen Large Congress in my pockets right now as I type this. I have been considering getting an Altantic Salt reground to a wharncliffe to have something a little stouter than the Centofante IV, but roughly the same size and weight.

Jens Anso has a few really nice designs, and EJ Baca used to have a beautiful wharncliffe/lambsfoot folder, Bob Terzuola made a fantastic pearl Harbor comm that I wish would get produced by someone, ans Kit carson has a model 21? small wharncliffe that somebody has got to make, please.

There are a few of my faves.

I was going toask who did the scales, but then it became obvious who did it..:D
