Wharnies are my favorite

Yes, the blade shape was my question. In that I thought the sheepsfoot was older, and that the Wharncliffe shape might have been modified from the Sheepfoot.

I now realize that the whole knife started as a "Wharncliffe". And only in modern days that we have shortened the meaning to just the blade.

I think the swayback, with its sleek wharncliffe blade, is a natural gentleman's knife.

I've had a fondness for this pattern since I first saw one. I may start poking around the exchange for a quality SBJ. Lovely example, sir!

P.S. I know this thread is primarily about single-blade Wharnies but is there any interest in seahorse whittlers? It's a pattern I have grown to like a lot with a master Wharncliffe blade. I have a couple I can snapshot at home that might fit the motif.

I think you would be in the right to post the whittlers. One of my favorite patterns.

I have a few wharncliffe knives myself and I just sold a couple on the exchange. I've got more than I need, not as many as I want.

But, my avatar knife, the Case mini copperhead looks somewhat similar to the "Wharncliffe knife". So does that Queen I have. But, my grail wharncliffe knife would be a GEC #92 Talon. I really like the #47 Viper, but it is a bit too bulky for me. I think the Talon would be better. I have some Case SBJ and one SBG that are sweet knives. I like them a lot.

Here it is with the Queen:

Oops! It's shown with another of my mini copperheads in deep canyon bone that is advertised as chestnut but looks a bit "pink" for chestnut.

The Queen definitely looks like a Wharncliffe Knife Ed, they have a very distinct frame - designed for Lord Wharncliffe's particular type of waistcoat perhaps! :D

I think the blade looks particularly good on a Swayback frame, when it's pretty much like an Ettrick.

I don't think I've ever carried this Joseph Rodgers knife!

I agree. Thank you for your post on the Wharncliffe knife. I had not known the "rest of the story" before.

Of the two, I like the Case pattern better because it gives me a bit more room to get to the nick on the pen blade with my short thumbnails. But, the opened angle of the Queen is better than the mCH.

A pleasure Ed, it has come up periodically here over the years. Lord Wharncliffe helped facilitate Rodgers' Royal Warrant, so I reckon they wanted to butter him up a bit! ;)

Looks like the quarter has been carried a bit.....:D:thumbup:

Nice knives Jack, here is my favorite - again......

Yes indeed Al, my lucky Quarter from Paul Hilborn :D  Always a pleasure to see that one :)

Somebody did carry that quarter a bit, though. Real silver it looks like.

It's been in my wallet a couple of years Ed, and I think had been around a fair bit before then! ;)
