What’s a reasonable wait?

There’s a knife on the exchange that I am trying to buy. The seller doesn’t list what payment methods he will take but does say “Paypal +3%” in the post.

3/31 (Tue) - I send a PM telling the seller that I would take the knife if he took a USPS MO and that if he only took Paypal I’d need a couple of days to move some funds around and would appreciate if he’d hold it for me.

4/1 (Wed) – No reply to my PM. Thinking that he may not have checked BF or can’t at work, I send an email to him through the BF system stating the same thing as in the previous PM.

4/2 (Thur) - I post “I’ll take it” in the thread. I also send a PM saying the same thing and asking for the Paypal address.

I don’t hear anything on Fri, and I don’t recall if I checked to see if the seller had been online or not. I check over the weekend as I’m getting a bit antsy and see the seller hasn’t been online until Sunday. I saw the “Last time active” change twice on Sun so he’s at least been on that many times. There’s no reply in the thread, no PM, no email. I even checked to make sure the BF email system was working and my address was correct by sending one to myself.

Today (Mon) he’s been on BF at least once, again going by the “Last time active”.

The seller has 100% positive feedback with 3 within the last month. Two of the comments state “Great trade, excellent communication” and “Smooth trade, good communication!” but obviously I’m not feeling that good/excellent communication right now.

Perhaps he just doesn’t want to sell it to me for whatever reason. I can accept that, it’s his knife and his decision but he should at least have the courtesy to tell me that. Maybe he already sold it and didn’t mark it as such in the post, again let me know. If the knife in question wasn’t something that’s very hard to find I’d just move on (edit my “I’ll take it”) but I really would like to have it.

Regardless, I made a commitment to buy the knife so I feel I have to honor that…but for how long? At what point do I forget about it if I’m not contacted? What expectation should I have that I’ll be contacted promptly? Am I just being impatient?

You don't owe the seller anything until he/she says that your offer is accepted. It is up to you to decide how long to keep the offer open if you never hear anything from the seller.

I once went through a similar thing, and after 3 days, I rescinded my offer.

7 days later, they go around to contacting me, but by then it was to late.

Sellers can subscribe to their own sale threads, to get instant email notification, so there is little excuse for not checking your own threads.

I agree, it's the seller's responsibility to check his or her listings regularly. I check my listings daily when I am trying to sell something here.

Blackhills, you seem to have been patient with the seller, but it sound like you may need to walk away from this one, especially since the seller has been online here but hasn't responded to you.

I agree with the above. You have the right to rescind your offer to buy with a clear conscience.

You're a lot more patient than I would have been. I've had a few W&C posts complaining about this very type of situation. I don't wait days though, after 24-48 hours and seeing the person checking in throughout the day I'll call it off and move on. Why sell something just to play the "stupid" game - it's saying,"here's my money in your face," and they just don't want it :grumpy:

If it's a trade thread, that's a whole other story. It's when there is a straight sell thread and you see them checking at the bottom of the screen that gets really frustrating.

Just my .02, sorry for the rant :o

Best of luck, J :)

Your wait has already exceeded "reasonable". I would put a "withdrawal of offer" in his/her/its for sale thread and be done with it.
all da best,
rats...

Move on with a clear conscience, I ship the next day or same day of payment, NO excuse for no communication.
Just my .02
