Good afternoon gents,

Over the time I´ve been roaming around this thread I have found opposed opinions about the SHBM, some people think it is still a great knife, some other think it belongs to the collector´s shelf... and to make matters even worse, Busse is releasing an anniversary edition this year.

the question should be like this:

Does the SHBM still has a use for someone looking for a fullsize knife?...or should the user keep his/her eye on the more modern designs?

I found this picture on google (I believe it belongs to this forum somewhere), but the only difference I can see is the seemingly ergonomic-less handle compared with the other mistresses.

Feel free to shoot your opinions and experiences.

Without ever handling one, I'd assume that the more modern ergonomic handles would be more comfortable for prolonged use. And the other thing that concerns me with the SHBM is that I feel like the butt end would pinch the pinky pretty bad during chopping. This is only an assumption, but that has been my experience chopping with the ASH, which has a similar handle style.

thats what i am scared off as well :/

so want my fist busse to be the battle mistress ..

Shbm is one of the BEST designs ever. It is one of my first Busse blades and it still gets used most often.

Hi Gravelface, Why do you say is one of the best designs? aesthetics? functionally, ergonomically?

I have restarted this Responce 10 times now. Not sure how to explain perfection....other than when you handle it, you know it. Like my dear old Dad used to tell me, you know your perfect pistol when you handle it, cause its just feels as natural as holding your own xxxx. The Mistress is the same way. In my hand it feels perfectly balanced, and still a powerful chopper. When I show folks my collection, folks are just drawn to it first. Not sure if it just feeds a primal instinct to chop and grunt...but I want to do both every time I hold it. I've handled all the Battle Mistress lines and above all, this one shines. Again for me, it blows the Ergo Bm away. The fusion is very nice, but the SHBM seems more refined. Don't get me wrong, the fusions (.25-.32) are beast and excellent choppers, but they start getting larger and larger till you have the NMFBM, which I found to be "too much" knife. Again, I really enjoyed the one I had, but it lacked in finesse compared to the SHBM.

And ive never experienced this "Busse Pinkie" I've read about. I've put hours and hours into using it and don't understand how folks get blisters, just choke up a slight amount and ta-da....pinkie doesn't rub the back......

Oh well, hope this helps if not.......go handle one, you will see. SHBM just speak to me, it's just that perfect design that appeals visually and performs as expected

The SHBMs are great. Except those silly 1/300 versions, they're next to useless and should all be sent to me for disposal

Tony, I hate to see you overloaded with all that junk, so I will help you at offer to pAy shipping for any here!!!

Jason, you actually pretty much nailed the reasons why I like the SHBMs so much. It's more than enough knife for any job, without being too much knife. The balance when choked up makes the knife almost weightless in hand. The handles are very comfortable, despite being a bit shorter than the Fusion handle. But even though feel is subjective, everyone really should try one at least once.
Speaking of handles, there is another reason that may be responsible for differing views on comfort. Back when the SHBMs were being made, there was quite a bit of variation between knives. I have some that I don't care for at all, I find the handles very blocky and it doesn't fit my hand well at all, but I have others that are among the most comfortable knives I own. The older smooth scale ones I find far more comfortable than the newer grooved slabs. The partial grooved scales can go either way for comfort.
So, if possible, try out a few different ones before you make up your mind. There is a reason why they are legends

Well, ergonomics of a knife is a personal thing. What one person likes, another may hate. I know people that dislike the SHBM and the SHSHII, and then there are those like me that love it.

I have large hands and would get "Busse Pinkie" so I designed my own handle.
I still own one SHBM, it's a Jungle Assault. I do like the Fusion Handles, if I had to stick to one BM it would be my old Number 37...Jason!

In the immortal words of the 3 Little Pigs....

Not by the hair on my chinny chin chin:D

I've wanted that configuration since I knew it existed, and now that it is finally here, here is where it will stay.

But thanks for having excellent taste and getting that configuration way back when

Edit to add: funny how we 3 were the last posters and owners of said Beauty

Pics, or it didn't happen!

Jason, don't invite Chuck to your house, he may have devised an operation on how to steal it when he visits you. :D

When he visited Skunk, he attempted to take Skunks LE, but skunk had this elaborate defense system, like the one used for the Hope diamond and it worked well, so skunk ran him off with his 50BMG, firing tracer rounds at chuck as chuck skipped his way out of the valley:eek:

Ok, you convinced me gravelface...and the rest of you...

...so there is one more busse and that´s it....that´ll be the last one.
