What’s Going on with Buck Prices?

This is kind of an interesting thread.

I got a brand spanking new USA made buck 112 with real ebony covers for just under $50 on sale. It's gorgeous, smooth, centered. Really nice. Regular price was 60 something.

So please... Learn me something here ....

Where are you going to get a USA made folding hunter of top notch quality for anything close to $50?

Bear and Son? Maybe. I just did a quick look and their stuff looks a bit more expensive for something comparable.

Other than that you have the hype brand manufacturers. If you want to pay $150-200 for a lockback that definitely wasn't meant for a normal person to use, then that's the way to go. I've done it. It wasn't worth it.

So a buck 110 used to be $25. Cigarettes used to be 2 bucks. Gas was a dollar and a quarter. Everything is stupid expensive anymore. I think it's a miracle that the basic Buck lineup is still affordable.

Oh no Buck has some stuff made in China. Everything is made in China or contains parts made in China. I don't know what kind of rock y'all are living under but that expensive swiss watch, the American car you are driving, the clothes/shoes you wear... Parts and pieces of all of it came from China.

Sorry I just kinda felt like being a jag today. Have a good night everyone!

This is the kind of post that has me wishing for a time-machine. I'd get some of those yellow Buck slippies for a couple wooden nickles. Then carve some more wooden nickles. It'd be a virtuous cycle.

Give me a pattern and I'll start cranking em out too!

Hopefully we can hit 88mph with a trunk full of wooden nickels.

Just an observation. Last month I bought a 112 in Magnacut, with my choice of handle wood, from Buck's Custom Shop for $145. The month before that I had a 110 in Magnacut made for $150. Custom knives, using the latest steel, made in the USA, with a lifetime warranty. Get on any on-line knife retailer's web site & look at the prices. I consider Buck's prices a bargain.

At least they’re not as bad as Benchmade. They’ve gotten insane and they raised their prices by $20 or so again over the summer.

Inflation is a insidious thief..and it's not linear. Walmart 110's are a perfect example of that. After years of basically a bargain price by ALL accounts it had to go up and it just seems dramatic. But if you avaraged over the years I believe it would still be considered a bargain.
Especially for Older collectors we tend to remember prices from the 80's and early eBay bargains..But a 1985 dollar by just avarage inflation numbers is almost $3.00. And many things needed to manufacturer a knife today, like insurance taxes utilities labor etc has increased by much higher factors. It's not Bucks fault and they have worked really hard to be more efficient..

I can't rip on Buck for their price increases. Its ridiculously expensive to employ workers and provide benefits and try to make a profit in US manufacturing with today's economy. I tip my hat to Buck for continuing to offer American-made knives when they could easily sell the name and let their entire product line go to Chinese made garbage. I'll pay more for a USA made Buck out of general principle.

I'm not a collector, but I bought this 110 sometime in the mid-70's, and I'm sure I paid under $25 for it. Still, that was a lot of money at the time for a knife, but I "needed" a Buck. I think gas was about 50-60 cents a gallon then, too.

Here is a print ad from 1989 when Walmart was selling a 110 for $29.96 and a 119 for $34.96. Up until a couple of years ago, these prices were $35.17 for the 110 and $48.60 for the 119. Walmart is now selling the 110 for $65 and the 119 for $75. The Bureau of Labor Statistics inflation calculator says that the 1989 prices should be $75.45 and $88.04. Although prices for these two knives at Walmart have increased dramatically over the past two years, current prices are still 16% and 17% lower than they were in 1989 adjusted for inflation.

That’s a cool ad. Yeah I saw the ebony handle 110s at Walmart for $35 and was flabbergasted so had to buy one for me and my brother as a Christmas gift.
