These should not necessarily be your favorites, but knives that you feel represent major contributions to the industry. Here's my list in no particular order:
1. SAK
2. Amercican Bowie
3. Either a trapper or stockman slippie.
4 Marbles-(Webster Marble is credited with making the first knife designed specifically for hunting.
5. Buck 110

Wow, my three favorite knives, (Sebenza, Emerson mini cqc7, and Spyderco Millie,) did not make my list

I'll list by type and my currant preference; excluding kitchen type, including Filet Knife.

Multi tool (SAK Climber)
Small fixed blade (Old KaBar)
Large fixed blade (BR Aurora)
Automatic (Lone Wolf D-2)
EDC folder (Kershaw Leek)

Hmmm, only five don’t seem enough :)

That's a very nice list!!!! I might possibly ditch the Bowie, just because it would only be a wall hanger for many of us, and add in a classic Spyderco. Maybe a Delica or Endura.

Impossible question!!
Emerson.
Spyderco.
Sodbuster.
Friction Folder.
INFI.
:)

KABAR Marine Utility with leather washer handles.
Spyderco Native, Delica or Endura.
Mora without a pommel.
Buck 110 or 119.
RAT RC Knife.

Great idea starter. My list:
Stockman
SAK
5" fb, clip point with stag handle
spidie (my first was a copilot with se)
Kbar with stacked leather.
How would our world be different without these guys? VERY...

Case CV Trapper
wood handle Mora
Cold Steel Carbon V Trailmaster
SAK Farmer
Ontario 12" machete
USAF Pilots Survival knife

Scout/Soldier pattern slipjoint
pilots survival
milspec marine combat
buck 110
classic spyderco or benchmade

A multiple blade knife such as Stockman or Dyad

A medium size locking folder. EDC.

A Multitool, Leatherman Supertool and so on.

A 3" to 5" utility fixed blade.

A large Chopping fixed blade or camp axe.

;)

The essential knives that I think everyone should have in their collection:

SAK
Spyderco Endura or Delica
Case Peanut
Leatherman multi-tool
Ka-Bar

And then go on from there. If you don't have these knives already, you're doing it wrong. The Buck 110 should be on that list too, but the OP said 5.

SAK (let's say a Farmer for the heck of it)
Case yellow handle (pick your pattern) in CV
Leatherman
A Fixed Blade, let's say a RAT RC-3 or RC-4
Spyderco Delica or Benchmade Griptilian

Buzzbait, I agree on the Bowie. I put it on my list because of it's historical importance. I intend to hang one on the wall as a decoration. Looks like a lot of people agree with the SAK and 110.
