Hey Fourm,

Today I wanted to ask you guys your opinion on SOG. Personally, I love SOG. But there steel they use in almost every knife AUS-8, SUCKS! I have a Seal-Pup Elite and it dulls in one day of useing it in the bush and then it has little chips on the edge from batoning and such. Which makes me have to sharpen it every time I get home. I am leaning on buying the GOVTac for a survival knife for a last ditch defense knife. BUT, I am not sure if I want it becuase I HATE the steel. But it looks like a sweet knife but I just hate AUS-8. What are your guys opinion on SOG and is the GOVTac worth buying?

Three things to look for when you want to buy a SOG folder. Made in Japan, VG-10 blade steel, Arc-Lock. Those are their best folders.
Their best fixed blades are called Fallkniven :) <== That's meant to be a witticism.

Im not a fan of their lower end stuff, but i have a titanium vision with vg10 steel and it is about the smoothest opening knife i have. Locks up solid with zero blade play. It truly is a great knife...but wasnt cheap.

I like some of their designs but most of the time i think i could get something higher quality from kershaw for less money.

I think you might be blaming the wrong thing.

AUS-8 happens to be a quite good steel.

What SOG is doing to it...I don't know.

That said, it sounds like you are disappointed with SOG. Why even consider them then? It's not like they are the only knife manufacturer on the planet.

If you like the GOVtac you definitely need to get a classic KABAR. 1095 is a great all around fixed blade steel.

I have a Creed and it is an excellent chopper, and no issues with the edge or steel. As for their customer service, I had to have some work done on a Power Plier several years ago and it took a while, but they fixed it, no questions asked. (I used it to cut concertina wire and bent the jaws.)

The SOGs that I have encountered were underwhelming. Massive amounts of play in all directions and overall cheap feeling. I'm sure they make some good knives, but none of the ones I've handled have been impressive to say the least.

IMO, I see them as grouped in with Gerber and CRKT for general quality and materials selection, companies I have owned but don't currently own anything from and probably won't own anything from at least in the near future.

Well I was mainly talking about there fixed blades with there shitty AUS-8 steel, I really didnt want to go into there blade-play folders but atleast I know im not the only one who thinks every single folder they have has flimsy blade-play.

I think most of them are ugly and cheaply made.

Some of their knives, especially their fixed blades, are well made- but most just don't float my boat.

I don't care for SOG's knives, but I know that's not true at all. Their Arc Lock folders are actually very nicely made.

I have four SOG folders and none of them have exhibited any blade play or faulty steel. They are a good product.

So...all the AUS-8 fixed blades of theirs that you own have bad steel. And all the SOG folders you have (which ones do you have?) have flimsy blade play.

But you are considering buying another SOG.

Something isn't making sense here.

I agree with the higher end folders are the only way to go with sog. I have friends that have sog's aegis and trident folders. While they work, there is the afformentioned bladeplay due to the construction of the handle. I played with a visionary, toothlock, and a xray. These models were far superior to the trident, flash, and aegis folders. No Bp and super sharp out of the box. The blade steel on all my friends folders is in much need of sharpening after a few uses, about a week maybe 2 with light use. I have been on the fence myself about a tech bowie. I keep talking myself out of it. I just think for the money there are a bunch more options that fit the bill. If you are going to do it though try to find the japan made and vg10 if possible.

So you love SOG, but hate the steel? What do you love about them, the handles? Get a knife with quality steel, not a knife with a good marketing campaign. Anything pushed by Gunny now days is off my list of things to buy.
