What are your biggest knife turn-offs ?

#1 Dangerously cheap pivots.

#2 Dangerously cheap locks

# 3 crummy sheaths (in specific, the fastening loop of the sheath)

# 4 People who don't know how to use knives yet buy the most expensive ones and still can't figure out why their own tool maimed them.

(in retrospect, send "#4" on my list to the top)

Choil
Ricasso
blade coatings
serrations
:barf:

Oh yeah, and anything with a blade longer than 5" that isn't a machete or axe. But that's more of a personal preference.

finger grooved handles. I can accept one for the index finger on the right knife, but those handles that look like a cutoff "trench knife"???:barf::barf::barf:
I forgot to mention finger grooves.
Yeah don't like 'em.
They can look ok but not fit well.
Not everybody's finger are the same dimensions, i find most finger grooves to be too wide.
Except for the finger grooved Buck 110FG, which fit me just right.

Poor fit and finish! Wide gaps and covering rough grinds with a polish.

There are so many well-made knives available in every concievable style, I wonder who is buying all that junk I see in some catalogs. The main things that put me off are "surgical" stainless steel and made in China. I keep getting the Bud K catalog, but rarely is anything real or useful in it. Mall Ninja stuff. I hate most fantasy knives, with their bizarre skull handles and wierd shaped blades with all kinds of holes in them and useless hooks and curves. I confess that I did get a Sting from LOTR just for display. At least it isn't ugly. That was years ago. Now Bud K won't leave me alone.

Me too.I flipped through it yesterday & tossed it in the trash. Not 1 decent thing in there, except for maybe a couple of T-Shirts.

Also hate skeletonized handles.:thumbdn:

Blade Coatings (anything that degrades cutting performance should be eliminated).
Huge Ricassos (though I understand their use on some hunting knives).
Americanized Tanto’s (the Japanese had it right to start with).
Slab Sided or overly contoured scales (a handle should be made with the human hand in mind).
Pocket Clips that are obviously an afterthought on a beautiful folder or that ruin the way the knife fits in hand.

And the worse thing is blades that don’t cut worth a damn (be it poor edge geometry or silly putty edge retention, i.e., from lousy steel or botched heat treatment).

PS – I love the grind lines on a properly done High Hollow Ground blade, and find they work well when an edge cutter is required (like when skinning game).

Yeah thats another one, un-ergonomic grips.
Specifically i dislike very square grips.
I really like my old Buck Frontiersman but the original grip was made for people with lego hands, lol.
For years i didn't use it because i hated the grip.
Finally i just rounded the grip, now its one of my most comfortable knives.
Ruined the collectors value of course, but they were still in production when i modded it.
And since the collector value was gone i recently reduced the guard size as well.

I love my old Blackjack Anaconda II but the grips also are blocky, flat wide and blocky.
The kraton on it is starting to get waxy, which then leads to gooey/soft.
(Same thing happened to my old SOG Desert Dagger grip).
Once that happens it will be rehandled with an ergonomic comfortable wood handle.

Ill made sheathes

Overdone blade etch-unless in carbon so patina settles that...

Brass guards

Etched bolsters

Bayonet size- get an axe!!

Screw heads that can be seen....

I didn't realize so many people don't like clip points.

Some people are crazy.
