What are your favorite high-value low-cost knives?

s30v kershaw blur and onterio rat in d2

Ganzo, I've never paid over $20 for any Ganzo, auto or manual.
its high value low cost. those are low value and low cost.

in fact anything with aus-8, 8cr, 440c etc, i wouldnt consider high value at all.

this is a pretty good perspective.

At the risk of sounding unoriginal, I'll also say Victorinox SAKs.

My favorites:

Alox Pioneer SAK ($30 or less).
Executive SAK (approx. $35).

I could be set on most days with just these two pocketknives on me; they are a perfect complement to each other.

I basically agree, but everyone has their priorities. A folding knife should not make you sharpen it before the day is out but easy sharpening and stropping also go a long way to making a knife easier to use too. Many people are extremely happy with Buck's 420. I do find AUS8 to be a bit to soft for me too. If the Harnds Talisman came in D2 or better it could easily be my most carried EDC.

I've bookmarked a LOT of these knives mentioned fellas.

This is a very helpful thread to learn more from.
The steel vid was also very helpful. I like bottom line opinions. Explain a fact, and keep to the details. Like it!

Good idea for a thread Maximus.

Many people with Spyderco Byrd lineup as well as the Tenacious, persistence, and Resilience would disagree. I'd be one of throes people.

One not mentioned yet is the Kershaw Leek. Decent steel, good ergos, great blade profile, and an all around excellent edc for the average joe - all for ~$60.

I'd call that low-cost/high-value in my book.

But they certainly ain't high value low cost.

You certain about that? I have a Byrd CaraCara2 Rescue that only set me back $20 and I think I re a tremendous value for that.

My Tenacious at around $40 is, IMO one of the nicest fit and finished and best knives one can get in that price range.

Mora Companion and Craftline. Super sharp, cheap, light, excellent grip, looks good and you can beat on them.

SanRenMu and Enlan sell knives with 8Cr13MoV steel for less than US$10, sometimes even as low as US$7. How much does a Kershaw, CRKT, Spyderco or Gerber cost with the same steel?

Still can't beat the Chinese when it comes to low-cost knives, at least not for another decade.

Mo2 Mo2 I wouldn't write off AUS-8 or 440C both are good steel if HT properly it is just a question of how much it is to see if it can be a low cost high value knife.

E Etna Yes Chinese knives will be low cost but are they high value? I would say not.

So every low cost chinese knife is bad?

Pretty much any Vic SAK provides a lot of practicality and use out of any of their models, but that's mostly because of the other "not knife" parts that come with it.

i dont see how that is high value at all. thread is about high value low cost. thats a low cost and low value knife. how would it be high value? seriously.

no these are not high value knives. they are just low cost knives. i dont think you get the topic of the thread.

true that HT plays a roll. and in most of these knives the HT is soft and doesnt last long. not bad for poking and prying with but a piece of scrap metal would be better.

So every low cost chinese knife is bad?
NO not bad at all, just not high value low cost.

I never said they were bad merely not high value.
agree.

Let's take the Tenacious, for example. Yes, it's made in China and uses 8cr13mov. We get that.

However, it has fit/finish many knives that cost twice as much. The function in terms of design, durability, grip comfort blade shape etc... are very well thought out.

The value is in what the knife does and in how it's finished compared to the purchase price. The value has nothing to do with what particular steel is in the blade.

There is a reason that the Tenacious is usually one of the most recommended knives when people ask for a good folder under $50. Tenacious, and Rat 1/2 are very commonly suggested for best bang/buck in the $50 and under category for a reason despite having basic, ho-hum steels.

If they are not a great value TO YOU that's a different thing. But to speak in absolutes the way you are, saying that they are "certainly" not a good value... well... i'll just take it as hyperbole. I think most people disagree with you.
