What are your Survival/SHTF goals for 2008??

My Wife and I, took our life savings out of the bank, and bought gold coins.

That's very interesting. I respect your choice, but may I ask why you did that? (and I apologize if I'm diverting the thread)

Edit: To stay on this thread, my choices for 2008 are to improve the security of my home...to asess the property around me in terms of trees and shrubs...to improve the security of my windows...to at least consider the use of internal alarms...to get a proper generator hook-up...to improve my water and food supply...to improve my cash flow and financial security, which brings me back to my question up top to Johnny Reb.

store more food & water for bad times!

My thoughts exactly. Need to buy another Water Filter though, my PUR Hiker bit the dust.

I just ordered a M4, just need to get it set-up the way I want. After that I'll start stocking up on ammo, keeping at least a minimum of 1000 rounds.

My Browning Hi-Power will be sent in for a trigger job, better safety, and some Novak sights. After that I'll plan on getting another 1000 rounds of 9mm.

Family is set up with camping gear, so just need the essentials of food & water stocked up.

I would think that's about the minimum for any firearm you keep. It sounds like we're going to war ;) Actually, those extra rounds could become tradeable goods for other things you might want in desperate times.

Which brings up another point, the extra firearm that you own and don't use could be worth a good trade. How do you negotiate that trade?

Lots of good ideas on this thread.

Today, I have been practicing firemaking from materials found in nature.
(I am going to get it this year!)
Continue being in fighting shape.
Continue developing my plant knowledge.
more practice on cordage.

Work on my degree which can make me more dough. Then I can go on cool trips like some of the guys on this forum. Randall adventures here I come....6-7 years from now. A journey

There's a few tweaks I want to make to my gear.
Other than that the vast majority of money is going toward the Debt Free plan. The vast majority of time is going to dirt time and skill building (also doubles as F-U-N).

Coldwood - I prefer to keep at least a 1000 rounds on hand for all my firearms. With the rising cost of ammo, better now than later. As you have mentioned, there is the use of it as trade goods but I'd be careful of who you sold it to. The ammo I stock the most of is .22lr - inexpensive, fun to shoot, and good for food gathering.

psy-ops & Cpl Punishment also point out a good thing to have - instruction & dirt-time. I'm planning to attend a class in Herbal Medicine and try to make Terrill Hoffman's PWYP gathering. On top of that, my boys are old enough to go camping this year so more time will be spent in the woods.

Don't forget to look into good instruction in First Aid & stocking any medication you might need. I was a Army Medic & work as a Nurse now, but the Herbal Medicine class will help me supplement my knowledge with things I can find in nature.

You're right. I have wondered, in an extreme SHTF situation, how we might deal with the exchange of firearms and ammo...or if we would even want to try that. In extreme SHTF I probably wouldn't even be thinking about it.

(Edit: even though I live in a rural and fairly self-sufficient neighborhood, I can see some of them saying "There's zombies in the woods! Can you loan me a gun?")

Ditto on .22's, I love to shoot mine, easy to pick up an extra box here and there. :)

Last year I started building up a better than average portable first aid kit, but I know I have a long way to go...and I should get into a first aid/cpr class at our local community college.

Just bought a Marlin 981T, tube fed .22 bolt action rifle. What with shipping to my FFL and the 3 week waiting period, it'll be awhile before I get it in my hands. Bought a few boxes of different .22 ammo to try in it and will probably pick up several more before the rifle actually gets here. Once I got a round that shoots good out to 100 yards, I'll load up on it.

We need to put in wood for this winter as well as future needs, so will be keeping my eye on the Caltrans drop spots. They cut up down trees or trees that pose a danger along side freeways and drop them in different spots around the state and one such site is a 5 minute drive from us.

Adding more 3 gallon water bottles and rotate them into our drinking water.

Want to put in quite a bit of the dehydrated foods from Mtn. House. Yeah, they don't always taste good and they are full of salt, but they'll keep us eating and it's easy to store.

Just started going through our gear and will be updating, upgrading, replacing and removing as needed.

Soccer---you don't have to be 21 to get a rifle or shotgun----its only the pistol you have to wait for.
Depends on the state. He can buy a pistol from an individual in most states, just not from an FFL. It's not against federal law to buy a pistol for someone under 21.

Oops- just reading that he can't buy one in North Carolina. Too bad but probably not really that big of a deal. Get the 22 and shotgun first.

Purchases:
- 1911 .45 (Kimber most likely)
- Springfield M6 Scout
- Ammo for said items
- Complete my Urban/Wilderness Survival kits (individual/family) [folding saw, hatchet, SAK, SOG or Leatherman multitool, fire starter(s), small fixed blade, naglene, canteen cups, etc.]
- Extra propane tank(s)

Organize:
Set up a shelf in my garage with all necessary gear for a gas/electric/water outage - urban, no threat, survival
Establish a "survival" corner in my basement with all gear not in garage, to include pantry items/water
Review BOB briefcase items [will, trust, insurance paperwork, bank info, etc.]

I believe an urban, no threat, scenerio is more likely than me being lost in the woods, so I have to plan accordingly; but I must say the 'lost-in-the-woods' scenerio sound more fun...

Coldwood. Just watch the value of the dollar. pay attention to what happens in Iran. I have already prepared our home, now I want to secure our assets.

My goals?

For onr thing, I'm gonna stop cutting my fingers. I'm typing this one handed.:foot:

I hear you, Johnny Reb, no question, and gold has been appreciating better than a lot of stocks or money markets. I guess my concern is how do you use it for local exchange? I can see if I went to our local 7-11 and gave the guy a Krugerand in exchange for a tank of gas, he wouldn't know what to do with it, or how to give me change. Maybe I'm missing the point :)

We've done most everything. We have land, animals, guns, ammo, good neighbors. We have off the grid water. Tools. Enough to get by, long or short term.

Andy

Coldwood: The gold is for long term. I believe that when the S.H.T.F in this country it will be economical. I have other stuff for barter, I don`t drink, but have two cases of cheap booze stashed, tobacco, and coffee and t.p. lots of ammo, and knives. We might not even be able to get gas, Ironic, since our dollar depends so much on it. Beware the euro dollar.
