What Benchmades do you think are and aren't worth it after MAP?

Cant believe this debate is still going on. (ok,yea..I believe it) Usually perpetuated by some Spyder fan to keep the flames of contention burning. Im a BM fan, Im a Spydie fan....I like knives. Flying no flag, independent, no affiliation.

MAP enforcement was/is to protect the brick and mortars from on line distributor pricing. Supporting the little guy, or the mom and pop shops are something most support and preach.....until it effects your wallet, aye. Then many act like a bunch of whining spoiled brats who had thier free cookies taken away.

There are many "worth it" and some that may not be, from this and many manufactures and makers. "Worth" is a very subjective, personal and realative term.

I think all of these companies knives are overpiced. Benchmade makes my favorite folders. Only ones i have is a 810 and 275. Do i think either of them is worth $160. Maybe. Do i wanna pay that price absolutely not. And i don't. Got my Adamas from Opticsplanet around Xmas time for $130 shipped. Is the Adamas worth that i think so. If they were $110 would probably have two. The Para 2 and Dpx Hest i also think are over priced . Para 2 in the hand to me doesn't feel like it should be worth $120 even though i really like it. My Benchmades will be the last ones to ever get sold. They are just the elite to me. The way they feel, look, function are the best i've had so far. So would i pay $160 for a new 275 or 810. Answer is maybe. Do i like my Benchmades the best out of my folders yes. The price tag is a bummer for the most part though and will limit me from buying more of their knives. I think the average price for the 275 or 810 should be $130 $120. That's fair and defineatly worth the money at that.

I will agree that knives are pretty expensive. Before going BM I was having trouble finding a good US made knife that I dug. I will also agree I don't see what they hype is about the Para 2 and why it's so expensive. Good knife but it wasn't for me.

What does help with the cost is the warranty and CS BM offers.

I like Benchmade because of its customer service. BKC is a business, and they proudly produce high quality knives. At least for Blue & Black class, I can live with it.

One of my folding knife requirements are "able to open close" one handed, and ambidextrously. I have tried Spyderco Ball baring lock, bolt-lock and SOG arc lock, but nothing beats AXIS lock. Do I like the current MAP? No, but until other knife makes can com up with it, i.e. ZT makes lighter folder 2~4.5 oz, 3.5"+ with ambidextrous lock, I will continue to favor BKC. Their craftsmanship has been excellent, at least to my collection. YMMV.

My "worth it" list of current production.

810-1401
908/903
HK 14715

"Will get @ street price"
810
710
950
940
Barrages
Adamas

Also here is my hesitation toward switching to other makers.

ZT: Like their CS, but as you can see general blade shape of ZT, I don't think they can make narrower blade easily. AS benchmadebear has mentioned, it is a bit too bulky and heavy.

Spyderco: I own few Manix2, Sage 3, PolMdl, Dragonfly2. Exception of few blade, I am not that much into leaf shaped blade. 2 thing I like from them. One is that they adopt CQI (Constant Quality Improvement) Like some Japanese manufacture, the company always improve their product. Unfortunately, IMO BKC doesn't do it often enough, or they would only do with LE and not to be made again.

<Rant>
(I want RIFT in M390 with liners cross drilled!!!)
</Rant>

Yeah, still fan of BKC but more of "wait to see" attitude toward some of their model.

I didn't read the whole thread because i don't have time for random b.s..

I just wanted to add, what other knife company replaces blades for $30 dollars, does laser engraving for $5 dollars, pays for return shipping, and gives out free clips/screws..

CRK doesn't, Spyderco doesn't, CRKT doesn't, EKI doesn't, Hogue doesn't, Strider doesn't, William Henry doesn't, Cold Steel doesn't, Hinderer doesn't, KAI does majority of that at slight higher prices...

I have several knives from all different manufacturers over the years and majority of them have awesome customer service, but they all end up with the end user having to pay more if theres a problem 5 years down the line.

just saying.

So if I bought a 586 mini barrage with a black coated blade (which I am not fond of) will BM replace the blade with a satin/stonewashed one for $30? :)

Do you think the 810-1401 is better or worse than the 586 mini barrage with the same steel? The price difference is only about $13. I have been looking at the 586 for the M390 steel and smaller size but...:)

Those two knives couldn't be more different. The 810 is a hulk and a half. If you're concerned about blade length, get the Mini Barrage.

There's a $90 mini barrage in the exchange right now. With a custom Ti clip. That is worth it

MAP stands for Minimum ADVERTISED Price. Benchmade does not (and cannot) control the actual selling price.

Actual selling price can be considerably lower--they have the room to move, after all.

Be creative, and pit Benchmade dealers against each other. You can get that price down, particularly if you're buying several.

What ever happen to being able to run your own life, or business as you please?

I personally don't think any of the BMs are worth the new post-MAP prices. I've picked up a couple on the secondary market at sub-MAP prices, but I won't buy BM new again. My 7505-132 was the last one. At $367, that was a good value. At the current price of $510 - not so much. I own about 20 various BMs. Glad I got them when I did.

I still like the brand. I just don't think they are a good value any longer. Too many knives from too many brands and too little money, so this just helps me decide where my $$$ will go.

I'm a fan boy but @ todays $$, i'm really glad I purchased when I did.

You can still get good used deals and non dealer deals as well.

Yes. If it is satin to black, then it is a bit more. ($35~40, may be?)

Okay but I just found a new one with the satin/stonewash blade (not sure which it is) at a better price so I will try it! Thx.

I will try the Mini Barrage and see how I like it. I found alittle better deal on it so if I don't end up liking it, I hope I can get at least most my money back! :)

I have been seeing PM2's on Amazon for around $125. The temptation is becoming more than I can bear. I wish you still had your PM2, I would definitely give you my Grip and a chunk of cash to take that overhyped Spyder out of your hair.

The 586 blade is not stonewashed, but for $25 + $5 return shipping, they will swap to a satin blade. Satin blades are $25 and black blades are $30.

Yeah, I didn't know if they called them stonewashed or satin, guess I didnt pay enough attention while researching them but it is all good. Thx. for clearing it up! I found one with a satin blade at a better price then I had seen online anywhere so I hope I like it! :)

Like I said earlier! If by chance I dont like it, I hope I can recoop my funds back cause I didnt pay retail! LOL

Yep.

I think the 940 is worth it.

My pocket does too.

Make sure you're buying from a reputable dealer. There are very convincing fakes out there!

The pm2 is a good knife; it just wasn't for me. I didn't like how the knife carried and I didn't really care for the handles; look or feel.

I don't like the MAP pricing. They took away my incentive to buy Benchmade. Other contenders cost less for same quality.
