Being that today is Veteran's Day I was just wondering what branch did our great members serve in. Was there a reason you picked that branch at that time? Would you do it again? Maybe a story or two about your time served. Thanks to all Veteran's for your service!

I joined the USAF 20 years ago this month. I joined because almost everyone one of my cousins joined the USAF.

Served in the Army 1970-72. Had nothing to do with my choice... when Uncle Sam said "I want you!" you went. :D Would I do it again... yeah, without a doubt!

Army for me, 64-67. Enlisted out of high school on account of having no other plans....
In retrospect, a great idea. I spent my time in Germany and was out before Vietnam really heated up.

USAF, 30 years. Again? Yes, I think so. They treated me well ... helped me get a passel of physics degrees and even let me use them. Wasn't all fun and games, of course ... but what is?

1. Sun setting over New Mexico Desert. Giant aircraft equipped with mega death laser. Klaxons and lights running all over the range. Just about to hit the "fire" switch ... anticipating maximum death. Over the ridge marches Base CO with 15 VIPs. His bus stopped working in the south desert and he was too impatient to wait. You should have heard what our CO called him to his face.:):D

2. Staring a famous former Vice President in the face and telling him "No -- I won't do that. It's not ethical." We'll leave the rest of that event in the shadows where it belongs.:o

I was army, 80-84. A "Doomsday grunt" in cold war germany waiting for thousands of russian tanks to come clanking through the fulda gap shooting nukes and nerve agent as they went.

We trained hard in NBC warfare. I recall having to go 20 or more hours in MOPP4, having to pair off and watch each other sleep to make sure nobody died in their sleep in those cumbersome old masks.

What a different world back then. There was no ambiguity about who the bad guys were, and whose side everybody was on. Except the french of course. :)

Everybody should have the chance to go through decontamination in a german field next to a river in February, stripping down to nothing in single file line, getting scrubbed by Chem co. soldiers using long handled tank brooms. Men and women alike, too damn cold to care.

I was in a MP brigade attached to VII corp, later 4th INF (Mech)

Navy, 1985-89, ABE, USS Nimitz. Green shirts rule. (The back of the bus is ours. Leave us alone.)

thx - cpr

Air force. June '63 to May '67. In basic, they gave me 2 minutes to decide what kind of electronics I wanted to work on. Like an idiot, I chose ground radio. Geez! Everything I worked on still had tubes. I thought about making it a career until I was sent to Greenland. I spent my last year at Sondrestrom AB. It wasn't too bad since it was in southern Greenland, y'all. It was better then 'Nam, but I figured that if they can do that to me once, they can keep doing it to me, so I got out.

Air Force Security Service, 1965-69.
There used to be a Soviet Union. We took care of that. :p

US Army 99-07. Combat Engineer and later ROTC Cadre. Done a few things and seen a few more. Loved it and hated it.....depending on the day. Had the time of my life for the most part.

T'weren't no better in 71 when started. I was airborne radio and the ARC-34 was still a tube burner. Spent my SEA tour in a better place though. Tahkli and Korat were out of harms way.....then I signed on with ARFCOS and saw more of Vietnam than I wanted to. Stupid decision in retrospect but still wouldn't trade my 24 years of service experiences for anything.
