What Brand Makes Good Fixed Blade Knives?

I'm mainly looking or a good fighting knife, also a hunting knife. Someone please help!

Since you don't want stainless, if you could tell us what steel properties are needed for a good fighting knife and why, maybe we could help you better.

Well, I ordered a Kabar and a Buck to try them out. The Buck is only 4-inches so I won't be using it for fighting and it is made of S30V which is the only kind of stainless steel I think I can trust, BUT I've never tested it before. I'm really wary of buying any other type of stainless steel blade.
A lot of people are saying Busse, but they don't seem to have Bowies. Maybe I just missed them. They have an awesome looking trench knife, but I really want a bowie right now. Maybe I'll get that trench knife somewhere down the road, probably.
I'm checking out Bark River right now.

Again, it would help us help you if we knew why you don't feel you can get in a knife fight with a stainless steel blade (other than S30V).

Also what is your minimum size for a knife fighting knife?

Thanks!

But I don't plan on fighting anything, but I anticipate fighting either muggers or multiple guys that try to jump me with melee weapons (if that ever happens to me).

Whoa. Now I'm confused. Maybe you could clarify.

You want a dedicated fighting knife, preferably a Bowie correct?

Because you anticipate getting attacked by multiple guys with melee weapons (knives, spears, maces, clubs, etc), correct?

Just want to make sure I'm on your page, here.

Go custom. For the price of one Busse you could have 2 handmade knives, check out the Exchange\for sale by maker\fixed blades. Then again, I'm sure the Busse FLAMBAM racks up 20 damage points on most berzerkers...

You might look at s30v's impact toughness data. It's not really designed for extreme toughness in a very large blade. However, there are tough stainless steels. Still, if you want a big knife you are probably better off with 3V, S7, 5160, or really any of the 10XX series (1095, etc). Look at the Becker BK-7. It's large, tough, and last I checked around $70 with a sheath.

I like the Blackjack 1-7 for your purpose, but it is a bit big for me to carry. The Blackjack 125 is closer to my comfortable size and the Model 5 is designed as a fighting knife. I much prefer a folder. On the other hand, I sometimes wear a small fixed blade in the horizontal kydex sheath made by Bob Dozier. Very fast to deploy if that is your thing. Dozier doesn't do the bowie style however.

Hard to beat the Kabar Becker BK-16 for a hunting sized knife. I like it and the price. Easy to sharpen too.

Just posted and I see that you have made your choice at least for now.

That size blade would certainly limit one to fighting only very slender muggers or multiple guys that try to jump you with melee weapons and the odds of that are slim, no pun intended. I pity the fool armed only with a 4" Buck S30V who unwittingly enters a fat mugger's choke-point. If it were carbon steel you might have a chance, I suppose. Good thing you picked up the Kabar too. :)

Maybe more detailed information about yourself and your knive needs will help us point you in the right direction.
  • Where (or under what circumstances) will you be exposed to attack from multiple attackers with melee weapons?
  • What specifically about stainless steel puts you off? You note you would trust S30V. Good choice. But since that one is acceptable, there would then be many other stainless steels that should likewise be acceptable too...almost by definition. Now had you said you just plain prefer carbon steel, or even specified a single carbon steel (1095, D2, 3V) that would have narrowed it down for us.
  • Bowie knife. Why just a Bowie knife? What are you even calling a Bowie? Now there's a whole lot of tradition there with a Bowie but that does keep you within a fairly narrow range of things.
  • What is you price threshold? $50, $100, $200, $500, $1,000? That'll make a tremedous difference in what is recommended but need not impact how good of knife you'd get...except maybe down around $50.
  • What are you size requirements? Maybe I missed that but that's important too.
  • How old are you?
This is the sort of stuff that will allow us to assist with your knife needs. FWIW just about every

The most effective part of the the kabar for fighting is the pommel in the end.

Get yourself a baton of some sort if you feel the need to fight multiple guys.

Maybe some nunchacks?

Regardless, a knife is deadly force weapon. Don't expect to be using it sucesfully for self defense in a situation that results in anything less than dead attackers. If your using the blade and expect to live against a deadly assault, you must bleed them out as quickly as possible. Can't stop moving until they stop moving.

Better to make as much use of the pommel as possible and carry something other than a knife if this is a big threat for you.

What have you trained in? Better have a good understanding of the open hand if you're gunna efectivley use any tool in that situation, against multiple guys with melée weapons.

I seem to recall that "bowie" knives are illegal to carry in Texas. Maybe others can confirm or correct me.
