What brands WON'T you own?

Not having an extensive collection of knives, I don't own one of every major brand out there. Right now, just two Benchmades, three CRKTs, one each of Spyderco, Buck and Colt. Although I own three CRKTs, I am not a big fan of theirs. These were purchased at rock bottom prices, and they will probably be the last CRKTs I'll own.

There are certain brands that I inexplicably have no interest in. It may be a combination of overall look of the knife or just my perception of the type of knives they make. For instance, I'll never own a Cold Steel knife, because I don't like the name "Cold Steel". And Kershaw-just don't like the designs of their knives.

Spyderco has a unique look and some good values in their imported knives. (someday would like to get a Sage or one of their premium steel blades).

Benchmade has the Axis lock and a good reputation for building solid knives.

What brands do nothing for you, and you don't see that ever changing?

If you stay away from an entire brand of knives you could end up missing out on something you will genuinely like and enjoy.
Why cramp your horizons, when you can broaden them?

Not saying buy a knife you don't like, just saying that it's wiser to keep your options open.

I don't want to jump to conclusions, but I just bought my first SOG knife, I was warned on this forum before buying and I bought anyways. Well the blade has a lot of play, the knife handle rattles, and the blade knicks the clip. All this for a $165 MSRP knife. I'll be cautious before buying another SOG knife and that is the nicest I can say.

btw: that SOG is going in the mail tomorrow!

$165 and the thing rattles!

Im with you man. I replied in your SOG post from the other day. The same thing happened to me with a less expensive knife; the Flash 2. Only I have been given the royal treatment. A month of dealing with them and nothing to show for it. Even after contacting Chris at SOG via bladeforums they are not going to fix a defective verticaly challenged knife (bladeplay). Right out of the box it sucked.

SOG, you cant fool me twice.

Bad manufacturing controls and even worse customer service. If SOG doesnt make some changes they will never last.

If they had of just fixed my knife I would have an Aegis in the mail, but they would rather blow off customers who have problems than make friends of them. F@#$ SOG.

I will not for the life of me own an SOG after having read so many horrible accounts of crappy customer service and fit/finish qualities. I don't care if they gave me their top of the line model for free (whatever model that may be). I will not stand behind a company whose customer service ranges from bad to worse.

I own an older CRKT Mirage, but that's the only one I'll own. Just had too many problems and too many disappoints to waist my time and money on more. Customer service is great though.

I will never own a SOG, Gerber or a new Schrade(I do own a new Schrade but that is because a Manager at my last job gave it to me for free but beyond getting one for free I won't pay for one)

I am into knives and not so much brands in general although my choices are very often limited to certain brands. That aside I don't think I'll buy Striders, Microtech, and Tops.

There is at the moment no brand that I wouldn't own.

There are however quite a few that I won't buy because I think their prices are waaay to out there. But that's a different topic.

Strider, Bear MGC, Ontario, Benchmade. Not to say that I am selling all that I do own now, I just refuse to do business with them for my own reasons.

Cold Steel: Overpriced crap, shady business ethics, design thievery, etc
CRKT: once bitten, (3 stitches) twice shy
Gerber: Once a good company, now just a subdivision of a scissor company
Mantis & Dark Ops: Mall ninja crap
Taylor/MTech/Maxim: Chinese made rip-off crap

There's other companies, like SOG or Emerson, that I have no conscientious objection to, they just don't really float my boat so I'll likely never own anything from them.

Not that I WON'T buy anything from them, just that most of their stuff doesn't do it for me (with a few exceptions... and please feel free to inform me if these exceptions are in fact crap).

SOG - except Twitch II and Aegis, but the clips would be tossed trashward
Emerson - except CQC-8 and Horseman
Gerber - no exceptions
Coldsteel - except Pocket Bushman (it's just a sick, morbid curiosity)
Case - except Sodbuster
Ka-Bar - except Becker Necker and Dozier Folding Hunter
Buck - except Mayo/Waimea and Vantage Pro
Boker - except Trance and Begg Kiridashi
CRKT - except Tuition, Razel and Carson M4

mostly I simply avoid the dodgy chineese made rubbish (M-tech comes to mind)

I wouldn't buy darkops, because I wouldn't be able to look at the knife without either crying "why the **** did I buy that" or bursting out laughing.

I am unlikely to buy TOPS, cold steel, strider and several others, simply becuase I don't like thier designs.

SOG - even if I ignored the QC issues and ridiculous prices, I can't stand the way they shamelessly plaster their logo allover everything.

Who I won't buy from because I don't like their business practices:
Strider, Bark River, Dark Ops, Mantis, Microtech, Benchmade, Cold Steel, and Ontario (including Queen).

Who I will buy from any day of the week and twice on Sundays because I like their business practices and products:
Spyderco, Kershaw, Emerson, CRK, Case, Buck, RAT, Fallkniven, BladeTech, and Ka-Bar.

Regards,
3G
