What Did You Cut with Your Buck (Yesterday or Today)?

In my estimation, the 650 and 655 would be more sturdy knives (in general) than the 124. The 120, 119 and 124 are fashioned from 3/16th stock. If I were to employ the 'batoning' method to split wood, I'd rather use a thicker blade, or even an axe just to be on the safe side. My 124 has long since been retired after rendering sterling service.

Glad I took the 124. When I was done slicing up the tri-tip I used it to perform the Messy Meter Test by batoning a log...you can see the log in the second pic. I also have two ex-wives I would marry all over again LOL.

Hey Goose, you obviously have a better technique for batoning than I do... you should make an instructional video ;)

No Messy...I don't have a better technique. I just don't baton maple that is frigid frozen.
I still find myself cracking up over your baton gig. What a f'n hoot.

BTW, how is the replacement 650 holding out for ya so far?
I would be interested in your long term review or comparison against another Buck fixed.

I'm glad that you still find my plight amusing  :D

My Nighthawk is holding up well. I can't say I've been doing anything extreme with it except for some light batoning. It does get regular use in the kitchen as a heavy cutter for things like quartering a chicken or separating frozen burgers.

I did try using it to pound in some wooden garden stakes but decided that a nearby rock did a much better job. :o

I used my 110FG to make a half dozen fuzzsticks and take down a couple of boxes. Still shaving sharp.

Yes I've tried batoning frozen wood :o You could say that the video clip is a "re-creation" of this post: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showpost.php?p=4416419&postcount=28

So you don't have to read the whole thread, Joe replaced the knife and my new Nighthawk has worked flawlessly.

I read most of the tread following the breakage... was it the serrations that caused the break? I've got one of the serrated short nighthawks, is it at risk?

Or, was there a flaw in your steel?

Yeah, it was a bummer. It only made me laugh cause it validated that I am not the only kid on the block that gets excited about his new toy and then have it break in less than an hour.

I will stop kicking the dead horse...

The serrations were not the cause of the break. Joe sent me a note saying they found a flaw in the steel at the point where it broke.

No worries Gooser. Just FYI, I still have not received your 110DM for the bolt test. You may want to check with your carrier to see if they are having some delivery issues.... ;)

I "borrowed" a friend's 889CB to try out, and sliced some sausages for my 4 year old. She promptly said proudly
"Daddy, that's the knife you just got today"...
Wife gave me the "hmmm... we'll discuss this later look.":grumpy:
Darn observant kids! :o

Buck 110 cut off the hospital braclet off my wrist. Wife just had baby.

LOL -- reminds me of a t-shirt that my brother has with a say'n on the front, "The more I get to know people the more I like my dog" :)

Excepting some of the fine people in this forum.:D

I don't cut the cords. Thats what I pay the doctor for. He handed me some snips to cut the cord and I handed them back and said no way. Call me a wimp, but I haven't cut the cord on any of my kids.
